The Passage (Fox): S: Zach Morris

I was pleasantly surprised to see a promo run for this during football yesterday. I read the books and they were excellent. I don't have high hopes that it'll translate to TV though -- especially network TV.

The way they’re handling the book formatting will alienate viewers.
Spoiler:
I’m not sure how I’d do it differently if I was making it, but season 1 is the “present” and season 2 will show the 100 year time jump of the second half of the book. Casual viewers will probably hate that.

^^ Agreed. You can't put all your stars in the present day when it's such a small portion of the arc. I'm sure this will fail and I was actually hoping for a movie or mini-series on a better cable network.

Oh dear. I had no idea these books (which I loved) were being turned into a network series. I'll prepare myself ahead of time to be disappointed.

Wish this were going on Netflix or HBO instead... About halfway through the first book and enjoying it. I don't know if I will tune in to Fox to watch this....

I've never read the book, but it sounds like they would have been better off intercutting the two.

For the record, it's Mark-Paul Gosselaar

The creative team behind this is Ridley Scott and Matt Reeves.

Been waiting for this one for awhile. Read/listened to the books (x2). I hope it is good enough to get renewed. But nervous already since they apparently made some changes to S1 after they announced certain other things.

I began reading The Passage when it first came out. Thought it was very good until the
Spoiler:
time jump
and thought it was awful after that...only read half of the first novel. If it got better after that, I'll never know.

I’m a big fan of the book trilogy, but this doesn’t look very promising based on previews. We’ll see...

Agreed. I loved the first half and slogged through the second half. Haven't read books 2-3. I assume the first season of the show is based on book 1?

Pretty sure I read somewhere that the first season will just be the first half of book one.

Hmm. Well it was a little better than I was expecting, but still frustratingly different from the source material. And the first episode covered a lot of plot, making me skeptical that the first season will only be the first half of the first book.
Minor book spoilers:
Spoiler:
I’m starting to think this might merge the first halves of books 1 and 2 into this season. It would make sense since both books start out in present day and then have a 100 year time jump.

I guess it was watchable by the standards of network television in 2019. It's yet another vampire show that seems influenced by The Strain. The twist here is that the vampires are psychic. I really didn't like the voiceover narration and I've never been a fan of dramatic shows that require prominent child roles.

I was surprised at how much story was covered too, though I get that episode one has to grab viewers. Though I thought the expedition to Bolivia would've gotten more than a pre-credits snippet, since the way it was handled in the book made me think it would've made for a great action-horror set-piece.

Here's a question that was probably answered in the book (but I don't remember) that came back to me watching this: was there any reason why Amy specifically was so important to experiment on? If they just needed any orphaned child shouldn't there have been a number of possibilities that don't need a cross-country kidnapping?

I gave the pilot a go tonight.
I didn't buy it.
The "Brad" character offered up too many unrealistic decisions and behaviors that were simply not credible.
After a half hour it was obvious to me the show would follow the normal formula for TV melodrama.
I dumped it from my DVR and went on to something else...

She had no family, no ties to anybody that would technically look for her.

Watched this last night. As someone who knows little about the books, I enjoyed it. I'm a fan of the actor playing patient 0, or whatever they call him. I'll be sticking around for now.

I don't think she was specifically important, it was more that he decided to run and had too much knowledge of the operation.

That's a weakness comparing book to tv episode. In the book, Wolgast's arc is much more developed. Even though the episode hit on the key facts (agent who lost a child and a marriage, and is torn when his mission puts him in charge of an innocent child), it plays out very differently when covered over hundreds of pages versus a few minutes.

I hope there's more coming this season than the trailers and "coming this season" preview (at the end of the episode) show. Otherwise I can see viewing becoming a slog for me causing me to bail as well. While I get why they packed so much into the first episode, it removed all of the mystery that made the first half of the book so interesting to me. In the book, we began with Amy on the run but we didn't know why. Cutting between different storylines, we gradually learned more about Project NOAH and the nature of the vampires. But on tv, it's all just dumped there pretty much laying out what's going to happen: Amy gets to NOAH, they infect her (giving her superpowers), Amy and Wolgast run around some more, the "vampires" use their mind control to wreak havok at the facility until all hell breaks loose at the end.
