True Detective (S3E01/02) -- 2 Hour Season Premiere -- 1/13/19

Episode #17 (season 3, episode 1): "The Great War and Modern Memory"
Debut date: SUNDAY, JAN. 13 (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT)
The disappearance of a young Arkansas boy (Phoenix Elkin) and his sister (Lena McCarthy) in 1980 triggers vivid memories and enduring questions for retired detective Wayne Hays (Mahershala Ali), who worked the case 35 years before with partner Roland West (Stephen Dorff). What started as a routine case becomes a long journey to dissect and make sense of the crime.
Written by Nic Pizzolatto; directed by Jeremy Saulnier.
Episode #18 (season 3, episode 2): "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye"
Debut date: SUNDAY, JAN. 13 (10:00-11:00 p.m.)
Hays (Mahershala Ali) looks back at the aftermath of the 1980 Purcell case in West Finger, Ark., including possible evidence left behind at the Devil's Den, an outdoor hangout for local kids. As attention focuses on two conspicuous suspects - Brett Woodard (Michael Greyeyes), a solitary vet and trash collector, and Ted LaGrange (Shawn-Caulin Young), an ex-con with a penchant for children - the parents of the missing kids, Tom (Scoot McNairy) and Lucy Purcell (Mamie Gummer), receive a cryptic note from an anonymous source.
Written by Nic Pizzolatto; directed by Jeremy Saulnier.

So, so excited for this. Loved the multiple time lines of S1, glad they're going back to that. And Ali is on such a roll right now.

It was believed that season 2 was rushed into production and that's why the quality suffered even though it's only 8 episodes.

I will watch this regardless, but are there are reviews of this so far? Would be interested to see what early reactions are.

I think the real appeal of season one was having Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as co-leads. If it had featured two character actors instead of A-listers nobody would have watched it.

Hopefully this is better than S2.
S3 is at 74% so that's positive, however S2 is at 63% - so a fresh tomato doesn't necessarily mean much.

Really liked the first episode. It's slow but interesting. Awful close to Season One -- maybe too much. Still I'm invested so far. Will try to watch Episode 2 tomorrow.

The problem with the first 2 seasons was the writing and that is why I am in no hurry for S3.

I enjoyed both episodes. It's definitely a slow burn, but I like the mystery they set up.
Ali appears to be a solid choice as the lead and I like the 3 time periods they are using to tell his story. Guess we're looking at a case of Stockholm syndrome for the young girl who was kidnapped in the 80s in the 1990s timeline.
I also thought the ending was interesting seeing Hays going through his memory loss.
BTW, watch Nic Pizzolatto's Inside the Episode recaps. He gives some good information about episodes 1 and 2. He says that Hays is 70 years old in the 2015 portion.
Noticed on IMDB that David Milch is the writer for episode 4, which airs in 2 weeks. I'm looking forward to that one and seeing his spin on the characters.

Seemed like they brought back a lot of elements from season 1 with the car conversations with Hays and his partner and the time jumping.
Definitely a slow burn, but I’ll stick around.

I enjoyed both episodes.
I like that it seems a lot less convoluted than S1 and S2

Before I read this thread and because I haven't watched the second hour yet and don't want to be spoiled I just want to say that the first episode was one of the best episodes of television I've seen. Now this could change as the show progresses but right now I really enjoyed what I watched.

I will say that Ali's quiet delivery and heavy accent is a little hard for me to follow. I had to turn on the CC to watch the second hour in the gym.
