I'm just catching up on the first couple of episodes. Very underwhelming beginning but I'll give it more episodes to get better. Though not happy to hear that Alara may be leaving (thanks in part to Seth MacFarlane's penis) :(

This was a weird thing in this and the last episode ... set-ups that seemed like comedy gold not going for all of the laughs that were there. How could there not be any kind of payoff to Bortus's yearly urination? And there were some great suggestions from you guys in that thread. And misuse of the holodeck for porn has been something we've all been wondering about since we first saw the technology on ST:TNG. But while there were a couple of funny moments, it was all played so seriously.

I actually like the way Bortus's story ended up, with its source being the ritual on their home planet. I thought it reflected what probably happens a lot nowadays, a resentment building up, lack of communication, escape into into virtuality. His culture seems to be the main way tough modern topics are reflected and discussed.
The simulation scenes were actually a little distracting, with the 'oh how weird! reaction.
That's actually one of the things I like about this show, that while there's funny, it discusses serious topics as well (much like Star Trek.)
I do agree that there should have been some better punchline to the annual urination. Either he goes for like an hour going "Aaahhhh" the entire time, or it's a four-second dribble, or something.

Room wasn't the issue with the escape. I wish I had that much room even when flying in an airplane!
If they had said "the ship can't weigh more than X tons to escape the gravitational pull", that would make sense (of course then they could tear out all the chairs).

I like Alara :( I'll miss her being on the show. Lol - so Seth/Ed has that problem a lot, working with ex-significant others.

It comes down to Seth having too much respect for Trek in general. It's clear he hasn't decided completely what direction he wants to go.

I agree that this show doesn't really know what it wants to be. At times you feel like this could be a modern day Trek series that is fit for the whole family but then there are episodes where the subject matter is more low brow, but MacFarlane doesn't really go all out either. What's weird is that I mostly enjoy the show but I don't really know why.

I liked the ep. It made me comfortable..but i looked within and addressed my issues with what was going on with Bortus and I stopped trippin'. That said, that whole saving the 75 on the planet bit was BS.

Didn't care for this episode. Agree they should have played it for a few laughs if they really wanted to broach the subject.

I liked the episode.
Brings up the question of if we had a holodeck that could do that what would you do?
I guess you could do anything but on a deeper level who would you program into it.

what if there was someone from your past that you loved but that person didn’t respond in kind.
you could put that person into the program and be with them anytime you wanted.
If your loved one died you could put them into it.


Also. I know that it’s been revealed that the robot is actually a robot but it would have been really funny if at some point they would have revealed there was someone inside that shell.

The great thing about this ep is while Star Trek has addressed Holo-Addiction. THIS show addressed in the way that I think a lot of people really wonder about in terms of sex.

I agree I actually liked this episode and thought they tackled a rather bold subject in a somewhat serious manner. But I also think they didn't spend enough time on rescuing the survivors. They could have had that be the main plot and brought up some really intriguing ideas on choosing who gets to be rescued and who doesn't. Instead it's just a lottery? I think the idea of viewing a planet being engulfed by a growing star was fascinating but ultimately wasted in this story. Also it really bugged me that they could have easily fit a lot more people. They should have at least showed them packed all the way up to the seats.

The fact that they tackled it in such a serious manner is what I didn't like. It could have dealt with the negative relationship ramifications while still getting more comedy out of it.

The comedy came from the others reacting to it and the "virus" the ship computer got because of the porn. IDK...I was laughing pretty hard.

I laughed out loud several times. One of the funniest episodes. I guess it's the type of humor you either get or you don't. The marriage counseling was gold. "I feel like stabbing him again".
The second Bortus inserted the program into the holodeck I knew they were going to poke fun at people who get viruses from porn sites.

Ugh this will likely go down as the "Spock's Brain" of Orville.
