... and next week, Steve Carell will be hosting. He'll more than likely be promoting Beautiful Boy (since Welcome to Marwen doesn't come out for another month and change).

The Crenshaw-Davidson bit was classy.

Crenshaw is a classy guy and I am not a Democrat or a Republican but I respect him.

Davidson is cool but that was a dick move what he did on WU last weekend but glad both of them are cool and probably had more class than these people that blog on the internet with their political views.

Liev was pretty good though it did not seem he did a lot and maybe he had a cold.

He should come back and host more shows.

This was my favorite SNL show of the season.

I thought the joke was funny. It was the dismissive comment after saying "hes a war hero or whatever" that was a little disrespectful. But the joke was good. I don't understand the logic that because he is a veteran that somehow that disqualifies him and everyone else from having a sense of humor. It wasn't a mean or nasty joke. I dunno, I thought it was harmless. But I'm glad it pissed off enough people because I thought the follow up segment tonight was both funny and poignant.

I thought the best sketch tonight was the fighting brothers with Liev and his in the house hose. The interview outside the women's bathroom sketch was good too.

Pete Davidson specializes in cringe humor, so he’s going to be pushing the bounds of good taste. A month ago people were freaking out about him talking about tampering with Ariana Grande’s birth control. And he’s made cracks about his firefighter father dying on 9/11.

NBC most likely made Davidson apologize. That joke was so mild- just because you're a war hero doesn't mean you're a great politician. I found Crenshaw's speech he gave a bit too preachy for me and out of place for SNL.

Otherwise a relatively good episode.

I always get a laugh when Aidy Bryant breaks character and laughs during a skit. When Fallon and Davidson does it - it doesn't add anything... but for some reason it's funny when Aidy does it. It might be due to the way she tries to hold it in that makes it funny.

I agree. The "whatever" was the bad part. A soldier suffering a terrible injury in battle is not "whatever".

The premise of the bit --making fun of people based on how they look in a photo-- is something Fallon does every week with his sports superlatives, and Colbert does once or twice every night as well.

Since Che was pre-reacting to the joke about Crenshaw, they should have been better prepared to mitigate the offensiveness, and Davidson tossing in a "whatever" was NOT the way to go.

Re: SNL (S44S05) -- 11/10/18 -- H: Liev Schrieber -- MG: Lil Wayne

I wondered if the Liev Schrieber as host would be one of those "so crazy it might make sense" lind of things, like maybe he had this hidden well of comedic talent.

WRONG!!

He was awful. Exactly as stiff and unfunny as I would have expected.

Why would he be invited to host??

He IS NOT instantly face-recognizably famous.

Even after being reminded of who he is, he would not strike most people as particularly famous. Ray Donovan is not a popular, or even a buzz-worthy show.

Really, they have had a pretty shitty slate of hosts so far this season.

Kind of funny that DeNiro was in the open because I coudn’t think of anyone that had as much difficulty reading the cue cards as Schrieber did since DeNiro. He fucked up a bunch of lines.

Re: SNL (S44S05) -- 11/10/18 -- H: Liev Schrieber -- MG: Lil Wayne

I thought the Davidson/Crenshaw bit was VERY funny and it shows that there is still room for non-partisan humor that can appeal to everyone. All I see on TV today from Late Night are just partisan jokes about Trump only playing to the liberal crowd, but there is room for jokes that appeal to everyone. Trump gives these guys alot of material, but I think they handle it in a too much partisan way focusing on a certain base of people in the country.

I think Crenshaw gets credit for not having a hissy fit after the initial joke as he didn't call for a boycott of SNL or firing of Davidson like many liberals do today (For example: Jimmy Fallon told Norm MacDonald in the greenroom he had to ask him to leave cause his liberal producers were actually crying regarding the comments he made about Roseanne and Louis CK). It's that hysteria which is ruining late night.

And I give Davidson props for taking his lumps in the segment, (The Ariana Grande ringtone part was very funny especially after what he said last week), as both guys came out looking good in the end. Crenshaw looks like he can take a joke, and Davidson looks like he's not a bad guy and this is what happens in comedy as sometimes you swing and miss.

But I'm sure we will go back to partisan comedy that only appeals to each base of the country (which is totally annoying) as the segment proves that something very funny to the masses truimphs anything that is partisan and trying to be funny to a certain group.

DeNiro always sucks on these shows... Liev was pretty awesome, IMO. He's not a comedy guy but his giggling during the "ghost" skit was hilarious.
Who was the woman singing with Lil Wayne during the first song? Was that Halsey?

Hadn't heard about the Crenshaw bit. The response was really well done, I dig it.

So the President can talk shit about a Senator who lost her legs in a war but a comedian can't poke fun at someone losing an eye? Got it.

He has done comedies like Goon Last of the Enforcers Isle of Dogs, Fading Gigolo, and Clear History to name a few.

So far all the hosts for the 2018-2019 season have done comedy before though Adam Driver is known more for his dramatic work.

Yes it was. The only good thing in that song.

I don't think SNL was partisan in the 90's when they blasted both parties and Clinton was always the butt of jokes. Norm McDonald and Colin Quiin made fun of both parties on WU and maybe Nealon too.

I will give Pete Davidson absolute credit. He not only ate shit but played total straight man to Crenshaw and I think he came off so much better for it. I've watched this a half dozen times, but the look Crenshaw shoots Pete and Pete's reaction to the audience when Grande's song plays on his phone...they couldn't imitate that 100 times if they tried. It was all scripted, but wow did that moment feel real.

Am I a monster for kind of wishing Crenshaw had ended the bit with “If we have to do this again, I’ll feed you to sharks in my volcano lair”?

I had no problem with the joke, just the dismissive "whatever"; if Pete had qualified it with an acknowledgement of Crenshaw's service I don't think there would have been a controversy. I loved the joke. Crenshaw seems to be a decent guy (one of the good Republicans, if such a thing still exists), and it was a classy move on his part to not call for a public stoning. Good stuff.

Re: SNL (S44S05) -- 11/10/18 -- H: Liev Schrieber -- MG: Lil Wayne

One of the stronger episodes in quite a while. I'm surprised no one has mentioned the "Invest/Incest Twins" sketch, tt seems like a classic in the 'Schweddy Balls' category. And I also liked the 'Unity' video (I actually laughed out loud at the pilot interrupting the movie - "and visibility is ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh....").

I even liked Lil Wayne a bit, he seemed to have better melodies than a lot of rap/hip-hop artists they have on the show. (And his drummer, assuming he was actually playing live, killed it on the first song.)
