The Kids Are Alright (ABC) - S: Michael Cudlitz, Mary McCormack - premieres 10/16/18

SERIES PREMIERE

THE CLEARY HOUSEHOLD IS TURNED UPSIDE DOWN WHEN THE OLDEST SON RETURNS HOME AND ANNOUNCES HE'S QUITTING THE SEMINARY ON THE SERIES PREMIERE OF ABC'S NEW COMEDY 'THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT,' TUESDAY, OCT. 16

From creator and executive producer Tim Doyle ("Last Man Standing," "The Real O'Neals") comes "The Kids Are Alright," a series inspired by his childhood. This ensemble comedy starring Michael Cudlitz ("The Walking Dead," "Southland") and Mary McCormack ("In Plain Sight," "West Wing") follows a traditional Irish-Catholic family, the Clearys, as they navigate big and small changes during one of America's most turbulent decades. The series premieres TUESDAY, OCT. 16 (8:31-9:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network, streaming and on demand.

Set in the 1970s in a working-class neighborhood outside Los Angeles, Mike and Peggy raise eight boisterous boys who live out their days with little supervision. The household is turned upside down when oldest son Lawrence returns home and announces he's quitting the seminary to go off and "save the world." Times are changing and this family will never be the same. There are 10 people, three bedrooms, one bathroom and everyone in it for themselves.

In the premiere episode, "Pilot," Lawrence, the prodigal eldest Cleary son, returns home from the seminary and breaks the news to his family that he's dropping out for good, leaving Mike and Peggy upset and wondering why. Meanwhile, Timmy decides he wants to audition for a children's theatre production but when Peggy finds out where it's being held she forbids him from participating. Elsewhere, Eddie tries to keep his girlfriend a secret after Frank finds out and tries to blackmail him.

"The Kids Are Alright" stars Michael Cudlitz as Mike Cleary, Mary McCormack as Peggy Cleary, Sam Straley as Lawrence Cleary, Caleb Foote as Eddie Cleary, Sawyer Barth as Frank Cleary, Christopher Paul Richards as Joey Cleary, Jack Gore as Timmy Cleary, Andy Walken as William Cleary and Santino Barnard as Pat Cleary.

"Pilot" was written by Tim Doyle and directed by Randall Einhorn.

The series is inspired by the childhood of creator/executive producer Tim Doyle, who also narrates in voiceover as older Timmy. Randall Einhorn directed and was an executive producer on the pilot. The series is from ABC Studios.

Are there any CSIs on anymore? Because we do need more shows with theme songs by The Who.

This was way too much like The Wonder Years, right down to the voice overs.

I didn't really like it too much, but it was the pilot episode, so I'll give it a few more chances to get going. I liked the part with the dad and the seminary son in the car, but the comedy was just standard sitcom rehash. My anachronistic nitpick for this episode: "Take a Chill Pill" was not a phrase in the 70s

I thought this was pretty good, I like Cudlitz, I come from a big Irish Catholic family myself, so this has another level of personal interest. Hope it sticks around.
