The Goldbergs (ABC) -- Season 6 Thread -- Premieres 9/26/18

Just had to get this started because I am really looking forward to picking this up.

I've been binging the previous seasons on Hulu and just loving every minute, every show. I've done a complete 360 on this show, only having seen bits and pieces, I really thought Barry and Beverly were such annoying characters in the little I saw, but they completely won me over, along with the entire cast, which are excellent.

But, it has humor, silliness and heart and that is what I love in my sitcoms. Can't wait...

In the 1980s, geeky 11-year-old Adam uses a video camera to document his family's crazy life. His mother, Beverly, is overprotective and lacks boundaries, while his dad has a hot temper and finds it difficult to parent without screaming. Rounding out the clan are Adam's terrifying sister, Erica, 17; his older brother, Barry, who has middle-child syndrome; and the family's beloved grandfather, Al `Pops' Solomon. Pops is responsible for wild antics, including offering drinks to Barry and teaching Adam about the ways of love - which create more chaos in an already high-strung family.

Narrated by: Patton Oswalt
Starring: Wendi McLendon-Covey, Jeff Garlin, Hayley Orrantia, Sean Giambrone, Troy Gentile, George Segal

That’s fucking awesome! I sincerely can’t imagne the production costs with buying the rights to all those great, iconic, original songs from the 80’s, not to mention the references and movie and tv bits and pieces. So authentic and perfect...

Back to form. This show doesn’t miss a beat. The homages are just great.

I don’t watch the show but I’m interested. However, if it’s like the Rick Moranis/Dark Helmet cameo I will be prepared to be (extremely) underwhelmed.

Why. That was great even if short.

In the off-season I watched the first 5 seasons of the show, so this is the first I'm watching as it's aired.

I enjoy the show, but when watching about 10 episodes a week for a couple months to catch up - it becomes obvious the story lines get VERY repetitive. The main theme is how Beverly smothers her kids beyond belief. It's not just a character trait we see while new story lines are presented - her smothering IS the story line in about 10 episodes each season.

This season premiere picks up where they left off - Beverly's "mixing in" again.

I agree.
Grew up in Philly and love all the philly stuff but the Smother storylines need to go away.

And don't forget one of the kids snapping back at Beverly, then realizing she just loves them/they'll eventually be moving out. Rotate these plots among the three kids. Gets stale, just change out Murray for Beverly.

That said, I do like the show, although more for Adam and Erica, less for Barry. Love the 80s pop culture, I'll keep coming back this season. What can we expect for the season 7 premiere? Pretty in Pink?

They switched out Jackie's. I haven't been this confused since Bewitched switched Darrin's on me.

I finally dropped the show after the Premiere. I loved it the first 2-3 years, but for me the plots are just the same structure almost every episode and it's become tiresome. Too bad really

Yea, the second episode really doesn't stray much at all from what we've seen many many times before. The mother/girlfriend thing (they just based it around food) and Adam trying to keep his girlfriend (who they apparently changed actresses - but made her goth to try and hide it?).

I know the show doesn't root itself in reality, so maybe it's best not to dig too deeply... but the ages of everyone isn't making sense to me.

We know all the guys are dating girls who are older... Jackie is 1 year older than Adam, same with Lainey/Barry and Erica/Jeff. However, this is the 2nd year Erica/Lainey have been out of high school - but the JTP are still in highschool? Shouldn't they be in college now? And I'm pretty sure Johnny Atkins and his girlfriend were in the same grade as Erica - but they're spending 2 extra years in highschool?

Yeah, at first I thought it was the "new look" Jackie that confused me, but I soon realized it was a different actress. Also agree on the repetitiveness bogging the show down. There's only so many 80s references you can make, I guess. Which explains why they went with a 70s theme for this week.

I had to look closely to make sure Rush Guy's Celica wasn't my old one.

I still enjoy the show. Yeah the plots are basically all the same but it's easy to watch light TV. I don't expect much and it doesn't give me much.

I didn't even realize that Jackie was a new actress. The really weird thing is that the actress is 20 and four years older than the actor who plays Adam.

Re: The Goldbergs (ABC) -- Season 6 Thread -- Premieres 9/26/18

I thought the guy playing Adam is 18 (19?) in real life, so he's playing younger as well. I suppose I could go to IMDb and find this out if I really wanted to.

I wish since they had Rick Springfield on as a guest star that they would have included one of his hits in the episode.

I hate to be this guy, but did Hayley Orrantia (Erica) lose weight in between seasons?

Looks like a little.
Her and the Barry got a little chubby last season.

I hear what you guys are saying with repetitive stories, but I am still having so much fun with new season, while catching up with older. It’s just silly fun that surprises you every so often with real heart and warmth...

Does anyone know the production budget of most episodes? Gotta be high and probably highest of all abc sitcoms (really don’t know much, but seems logical)...

Anyone still watch this? I really find it funny. Even though basically same episode over and over they somehow make it work in all its sillyness, but with some heart. To know that a lot was taken from writer Adam F. Goldberg’s real life is crazy. But they make the nostalgia work and so authentic...

We still watch it and enjoy it however too many episodes revolve around what an idiot their mother was. Last night's which blended The Wedding Singer was great.

I still watch some because I like it but mostly because I like the Philadelphia references.

How did Adam have an Ecto 1 Transformer in the '80s when they just announced it last week? https://www.cbr.com/ghostbusters-ect...-comic-figure/

It was cool to have Clancy Brown taking part in the Highlander references.
