Marvel Cinematic Universe shows on Disney+ Discussion Thread - news, rumors, etc.

Disney is enlisting Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as the company prepares to launch its upcoming streaming service. The entertainment giant is in early development on an ambitious plan for a number of limited series centered on popular characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These series will likely include shows centered on Loki and the Scarlet Witch, along with other beloved superheroes who have yet to appear in their own standalone movies.

Marvel and Disney had no comment.

There’s an important distinction from other Marvel small screen efforts, however. The actors who portrayed these heroes and villains in the Avengers films and their spinoffs, such as Tom Hiddelston and Elizabeth Olsen, are expected to play them in the streaming shows. Moreover, though sources close to the production are staying mum on the cost of the programming, the budgets are expected to be hefty rivaling those of a major studio productions. Each series is expected to include six to eight episodes. Marvel Studios will produce the shows and Kevin Feige, the guru of all things MCU, is expected to take a hands-on role in their development.

The pricey gamble with one of the crown jewels of the Disney film empire is a sign of how much the company has riding on its direct-to-consumer platform. As companies such as Netflix and Amazon continue to grow their user base, Disney is trying to find a way to establish a toehold in the streaming revolution upending Hollywood. The company has kept the details of the service close to the vest, beyond saying that it will likely cost less than Netflix and will launch at some point in late 2019.

Disney has already started to unwind its licensing deals in order to put as much premium content on the platform as possible. That’s meant that the company is forfeiting billions of dollars in profit, as well as shouldering the cost of developing the technology. The company has announced a number of high-profile projects, including a Star Wars series overseen by “Jungle Book” director Jon Favreau, a show based on “High School Musical,” and a live-action “Lady and the Tramp” film. The company also plans to offer several new releases when it launches, including its live-action “Dumbo” film and “Captain Marvel.”

Many of these projects are expensive bets. The Star Wars series will reportedly cost $100 million and the movies are expected to carry budgets north of $25 million. However, Disney has to spend big to make an impression. Netflix, its main rival, has 125 million subscribers globally and has lured top talent like Ryan Murphy (“American Horror Story”), Kenya Barris (“Black-ish”), and Shonda Rhimes (“Grey’s Anatomy”) to its platform with record-setting deals.

The Marvel series are in early development and writers have yet to be attached to the projects. Marvel TV Studios and Disney have been active with shows that include ABC’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and Netflix’s “Daredevil,” but sources say those shows will stay under Marvel TV banner with these limited series set under Marvel Studios.

Storylines for each series are still being teased out, but Disney appears to be holding back some significant fire power for the big screen. Insiders stress the Avengers that have gotten their own movies like Iron Man and Captain America will not be featured in the series with the studios focusing on characters who have served as second tier characters in the MCU.

When all is said and done, the Avengers shows could be the streaming service’s most ambitious project both in terms of their scope and budget. Most important, it gives the service something that will attract comic book fans and represents the type of content Netflix would love to get its hands on.

Nice, gives a little expansion to some of the secondary characters that don't get their own films or as much screen time in the major blockbusters.

And even if he stays dead, there is nothing saying these lil series have to be in the current time line. It could be about a past event.

As long as they bring back Sif I'm OK with this. :D

Interesting. I wonder if for these particular shows Disney will ditch the "one way street" where things that happen in them won't be acknowledged in the movies, since they have an actual stake in the platform. Yeah, they do, too, with ABC and Agents, but here they're launching a new service amidst already established players and an increasingly crowded marketplace.

I'm also curious with the bigger budgets and known characters if their guest stars will also be some of the main characters. Thor won't get his own series (as stated in the article), but it would be only natural for him to appear in Loki's show. Or maybe the Vision showing up in the Scarlet Witch's show.

The previous shows are ABC Studios/Marvel Television shows. These will be Marvel Studios, which is a separate entity in the Disney umbrella. So there should be much more integration with the overall MCU. The possibilities here are exciting.

This still isn't enough to get me to subscribe. I would love to see it, and maybe one day I will.

I just can't justify paying all of these a la carte streaming packages.
If they offer a free trial after they've aired, or maybe I'll subscribe for one month to binge them if they offer that.
Of course I say this about every new streaming platform to come out. I never thought I would pay for Shudder, but the yearly deal they offered was good enough. Outside of Amazon, Netflix, Hulu and HBO (temporarily), Shudder is the only one I subscribe to.

If Disney ends up doing a ~$20/yr subscription I probably would. But knowing Disney I doubt that would ever happen.

I'm sure most of these projects are just going to be rejected movie ideas. I can't wait for the Hawkeye show

I'm so glad that I don't feel the need to watch shows the day they are released. I could never justify paying for all of this content while being limited in the amount of time I have to actually watch them.

Didn't take long for the:

"Too many streaming services/too much content and not enough time in the day" posts. ;)

The era we live in now is for TV content is both a blessing and a curse.

I'm all in for a show with Loki, as long as it's Hiddleston.

I'll be interested. Not too keen on a show dedicated to Loki or Scarlet Witch though.

Love the idea. I would definitely sign up. The Marvel tv shows just feel too low rent to me with Inhumans being the worst so a bigger budget would do it just right. Hopefully they will explore more new Marvel characters like Doctor Doom.

Scarlet Witch developed into a super important character for the last movie, but she is one of the characters that I could not care less about.

This would be a good opportunity to bring back a Peggy Carter series that wasn't restricted by network TV.

Nice. Would enjoy seeing more of Falcon who has mostly been a backseat character in the MCU.

Probably slim chance they would be ready by the service's launch. It's suppose to be in late 2019.

The Mandolorian is filming right now and should be ready. These along with Scarlet Witch and Loki are only in the development phase.

But, they are looking promising with content.

I like the idea of having limited runs focusing on the secondary characters of the MCU. If it's kept a bit tighter than the Netflix series, and retains the original actors, I'm all for it.

Disney's streaming service is sounding pretty good, and I've lost track of everything they've said it should include. Once a legit price point comes out, I'll be looking into it pretty closely. I only have Netflix as a monthly streaming service cost, although I find enough on there to supplement my limited viewing time.

Re: MCU Shows in development on Disney streaming service - Loki, Scarlet Witch, Falco

I wonder how much difficulty it would be to move AoS over to the Marvel Studios division and have a bigger budget applied. With less cheesier writing, tighter episode lineup, it could really compliment the movies (properly).
For example, the whole time Cap and the others were in hiding, would make a great season of AoS where they joined forces taking down some threat (instead of the cracked earth and kree stuff they did).

Hopefully we'll see more integration of Cloak & Dagger too, and as previously mentioned, a revival of Agent Carter.

So this will be a fight between them to take up the mantle, right?

What About Paul Bettany’s Vision?

The other thing I’m hearing is that Paul Bettany‘s Vision will have a large part in the previously reported Scarlet Witch show. In fact, it may actually be a series more about the super-powered couple than just Wanda. This makes sense to me, as Wanda’s relationship with Vision is more compelling than Wanda on her own, and the two have a long and fascinating relationship in the pages of Marvel comics. I don’t think Scarlett Witch has received proper development outside of maybe Civil War, so a series that explores her further via her relationship with Vision makes sense.
