In 1686, 18-year-old Nella Oortman (Anya Taylor-Joy, Split, The Witch) arrives in Amsterdam to meet her wealthy merchant husband Johannes Brandt (Alex Hassell, Genius: Picasso), but is instead met by his sister Marin (Romola Garai, Churchillís Secret, The Hour). When Johannes appears, he presents her with a wedding gift: a cabinet that is a miniature replica of their home, to be furnished by an elusive Miniaturist, whose tiny creations mirror what is happening within the house in unexpected ways and seem to be predicting and unraveling the future with unsettling precision.

As Nella begins to uncover its secrets and those of the Brandt household she realizes the escalating dangers that await them all. Does the Miniaturist hold their fate in her hands? And will she be the key to their salvation or the architect of their downfall?

Adapted from Jessie Burtonís internationally best-selling novel, The Miniaturist, a ravishing three-part period thriller, premieres Sunday, September 9, 2018, 9/8c on MASTERPIECE on PBS.

Didn't see it, but Anya Taylor-Joy is simply a joy to watch. I might tune in just for her. I saw Thoroughbreds and Marrowbone over the last week or so and became an instant fan.

Have you seen her in The Witch? She's pretty awesome in that.

Yeah, long time ago, when it first came out theatrically. I do remember "liking the lead actress" as my takeaway from that film, then when I saw those movies recently and looked up her history it all made sense.

The Witch was released two years ago.

Exactly. That's a long time and I've seen literally hundreds of movies since.

Bumping because I DVR'd this when it aired and have only just recently watched it.

I agree with the praise for Anya Taylor-Joy. I first saw her in The Witch and then the Shyamalan movies, and have been impressed with her. Looking forward to seeing her in The New Mutants this year.

I enjoyed the telling of this story, though I found some things to be disappointing. The reveal of how the miniaturist was able to 'predict' things that would happen was kind of explained briefly and not very satisfactorily, and then they just move on.

The drama of the events and interactions within the household were very good, though. Tragic, but interesting. I liked the last shot, with Petronella sitting down at her husband's desk, saying "I can do this."
