Mayans M.C. (FX) -- Series Thread -- Sons of Anarchy spinoff -- Premieres 9/4/18

Mayans M.C. is the next chapter in Kurt Sutter’s award-winning Sons of Anarchy saga.
Set in a post-Jax Teller world, Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes (JD Pardo) is fresh out of prison and a prospect in the Mayans M.C. charter on the Cali/Mexi border. Now, EZ must carve out his new identity in a town where he was once the golden boy with the American Dream in his grasp.
The series also stars Clayton Cardenas, Edward James Olmos, Sarah Bolger, Michael Irby, Carla Baratta, Antonio Jaramillo, Raoul Max Trujillo, Richard Cabral, and Danny Pino. Recurring stars include Emilio Rivera, Frankie Loyal, Joseph Lucero, Vincent Rocco Vargas, Maurice Compte, Gino Vento, Tony Plana and Ada Maris.
Mayans M.C.was co-created by Kurt Sutter and Elgin James. Norberto Barba directs the first two episodes. The series is executive produced by Sutter and Barba, with James as Co-Executive Producer. The 10-episode first season is produced by Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions.

The Pilot episode is 97 minutes with commercials. It's 67 minutes without

I saw an early preview of the Pilot on FX Plus Sunday night. I thought it was decent. Lots of violence and F bombs, which Sons didn't use.
There is a brief cameo from a SOA original. It's a non-speaking cameo in a flashback sequence.

I'll reluctantly give it a chance, but my expectations are extremely low. I thought Sutter was just writing the pilot and being an EP in name, but it seems he has written more episodes, which is a big turn off to me.
at Sepinwall's review. It was spot on when going into all the faults of SoA.

JD Pardo was a guest on our local FOX Station morning news show today promoting the show.

I wonder which one he took home with him.

Bring on the completely unnecessary and self-indulgent Gemma cameo -- I'm assuming there has to be one at some point.

Alright, so since it's already aired, this is what I understood and got out of it.
"EZ" the main character was once an aspiring college student and went to jail for killing a cop. The episode wasn't really clear on what happened to him and what he did. I read a recap that said he killed a dirty cop and was later exonerated when the cop was found out to be dirty. I'm assuming they will show what led up to that in a future episode? I felt like they jumped to him being in jail with no set up.
Gemma's cameo in the jail was pointless. That was basically a Sutter wink wink....look this is "connected" to Sons.
and then while in jail, he dumps his girlfriend who reveals that she's pregnant.
So then he joins the Mayans. His girlfriend is now the wife of the cartel boss who the Mayans are assisting smuggling drugs.
and then later it seems like EZ is actually an undercover informant for the police gathering Intel to help bring down the cartel. He said to his handler that he wants to get his life back.
I did like Michael Irby being the leader of this section of the Mayans.
As I said, overall I thought it was decent. But I felt like there were things missing. Also seems like EZ's father is fully embracing him being a Mayan.

You left out the part where some of the MC are anti-cartel freedom fighters willing to get their own brothers killed in drug heists to help out some weird lady and a bunch of Deadmau5 wannabe kids. Sheesh.
This is gearing up to be the typical Sutter cluster-f but I'm actually liking it and that has to do primarily with the casting.

Did not care much for this it all and lost interest towards the end.
As mentioned, Michael Irby was good.

I thought it was boring and didn't really hold my interest.
And, for fucks sake, just speak English. Having half of the dialogue in English and half in subtitled Spanish gets annoying and makes it difficult to follow all of these new characters and situations.

This continued a trend from Sons of Anarchy that I always found hilarious and totally unbelievable.... Where is law enforcement? This show has them gunning down ALOT of people in one instant and just like in SOA, there are no inquiries or police asking them any questions, cause you know, it wasn't like they drove thru a part of town where the shoot out happened wearing their friggin' colors!

All the episodes titles seem to have names with a "/" in them. They aren't airing two episodes.

I know I and most here don't really care about TV ratings anymore, but in case you're curious, Mayans MC was the most watched cable show Tuesday night.

God damn it people. This continues to give Sutter juice in the industry. Stop it.

I never really saw Danny Pino as a villain, but he's pretty good here as the Cartel guy. Looks like Tony Plana is playing his uncle. The torture scene in last night's episode where he threw the hot oil on that suspect who took his kid looked real.
I liked the scenes EZ and his Dad.
They jump around a lot between Spanish and English and for someone who's not used to reading subtitles, it could be kind of jarring and frustrating going back and forth between reading and listening. Lots of the cartel scenes are back and forth between English and Spanish.

Episode 2: a typical SOA chase put to shitty music. I don’t know how much longer I’m going to be able to last with this.
