1st episode was a little slow. Mostly set up. The Purge didn't begin until the 50 minute mark. There was actually no commercials for the 1st 30 minutes.
I guess we're following 3 storylines this season. I'm not quite following the office lady's storyline and that payoff at the end yet.
That cult that is sacrificing themselves on Purge night is interesting, but that sacrifice sequence was kind of lame. They freaking cut away from it into shadows.
I hope future episodes don't go PG-13 violence or cutaways. With FX and Paramount going crazy with the language and violence, there is no reason for this kind of show to go PG-13.

I would hope they won't dial down the violence since this is co-airing on SyFy. If you watched Blood Drive, that was brutal.

Yeah, FX turned into a commercial-based HBO pretty abruptly. Dipped their toe in it a couple times and then bam, uncensored Deadpool.
I guess we have Comedy Central to thank for all that.

Missed the premiere...will catch later.
Looking at the source material (the 4 movies), I don't know how to tone down the violence.
Violence IS the point.
I did, and loved its silly, over-the-topness.
I guess it's now cancelled...

I didn't hate the first episode. I was hoping they would explore different aspects of the purge instead of just violence. All crime is legal but the only crime committed is murder. I'm a little bored by the same old same old.

Thats how Ive always felt about the movies. Why does everyone go straight to murder? Go rob a bank or something.

Maybe with everybody working in that office they will be doing some white-collar crime. Probably not as interesting but would think there would be a lot of hacking during those 12 hours. I would probably be more afraid of all my money and 401k being taken than being murdered.

The problem is that "The Purge" has always been a half-baked concept. It's never been explained very well and it doesn't make a lot of sense, in terms of how it works. The movies have never really tried to provide a plausible explanation (and I've seen all the films) of how this would be sold to the public in the real world, and how the nation would survive a "Purge Night" even once.

Maybe the TV series will fill some of it in?
Regardless, I still enjoy the hell out of the fantasy of it all.

Another boring episode, IMO.

I'm enjoying this so far... If it was a Netflix/Amazon show I would have already binged the whole season.

This show is giving me flashbacks of The Mist. It's a concept that isn't strong enough to hold your interest for 10 episodes and the characters are just not that interesting.
Actually, now that I think about it, it feels more like The Walking Dead.....moments of violence to wake you up from boring character development.

I'm out.
Just watched The First Purge earlier this week and that movie was abysmal and this TV series felt like a chore to watch so I hadn't even managed to make myself watch the 3rd episode that aired 5 days ago so decided to just drop it.
Not even interested in checking out a 5th Purge film if one happens. I enjoyed the first and third films, but disliked the second film too.. Just doesn't do it for me, the lack of gore, the slow build up to nothing, and a bunch of characters I don't care about because they failed to get me invested in the characters.

I can't believe what a bore this show continues to be. I've fallen asleep during every episode. This was a blown opportunity to expand mythology. Instead, it is a bunch of soapy drama half the time with completely uninteresting characters.

Much like the movies, they want to use "The Purge" as a framework for individual storylines. The concept is so ill-conceived that it doesn't bear up to scrutiny; it's approached as more of a Fantasy.

I enjoyed the purge films (haven't seen the sequel yet), but this show is DOA. Uninteresting characters, glacial pacing and it has a cheap look. It plays like a straight to video sequel. And when did the USA network start dropping F bombs? Not that I mind, just surprised.

I was watching this first season (which ends next week) just to see where it goes.
And I guess here's where it goes...
They've thrown in a bizarre left turn in the last two/three episodes getting rid of half of the cast and bringing in a new side character played by veteran character actor Lee Tergesen (chewing a ridiculous amount of scenery) to bring together the remaining characters and give them a common personalized villain.
This feels like the production scrapped a third act that didn't work and just conjured up a fix.

I bailed on this very early on. It was really bad.

I guess I'm the only one who finished the season?
It had dull, drawn-out moments for sure, but I liked it as a whole and will likely give the next season a shot. It didn't hurt that Hannah Anderson was pretty smoking hot in her party dress.
I like to see them use a different cast for season 2 and maybe dig more into the back story of the event. We kind of got that in The First Purge but there's probably more to explore. That might be more interesting than just another night of mayhem.

I would like to see a Purge: The Next Day, where we get to see how people deal with each other when their neighbor tried unsuccessfully to kill them during the Purge.

Ideally, that would be Episode 10 of a ten-episode run. That's why it's strictly a "B" Exploitation concept and nothing more.
