Three of Toranaga's other generals were planning to commit seppuku during that meeting with Toranaga, in protest of his plans. Hiromatsu knew this and basically jumped in and did it himself so they wouldn't have to. Toranaga had expected the generals to do it, and that was part of his secret plan to make his rivals believe he was truly surrendering. Hiromatsu's act was unexpected, but will serve the same purpose.

I saw how Hiromatsu‘s act aided the plan, but I didn’t consider that it was spontaneous and connected to the generals in that way. Puts a new light on Toranaga’s performance.

that was a great episode and not just because of the end. the tense buildup in the ep was palpable. just excellent. one to go...

Best episode of the series.

i was wondering how they would make the event at the end impactful since they’ve cut out most of the Mariko/Blackthorne love story from the book, but they did a good job.

Seems like a lot to wrap up in one more episode. Better be a very long one.

That end kinda reminded me about Hodor in GoT.

Oh shit!

That ending. But Jesus there was so much tension. Especially the events leading up to Mariko’s almost suicide.

Might be a dumb question, but how come the dude wouldn't help block the door?
That was a very sad ending. She was such an incredible character, and her acting was outstanding.
Ready for the finale.

I think they knew that the men outside were going to blow the door with explosives. They had no hope of stopping them. Mariko was essentially committing suicide by standing against the door. Blackthorne did not wish to die that way.

Re: James Clavell's Shogun - Limited Series (FX) - premieres 2/27/24

I'm fully caught up on this now. It's very good. I remember the original miniseries - remember my mom watching it when I was a kid - but not too well.

But I have to wonder - why is every day in Japan in the 17th century so dark and gloomy here? Like every scene is overcast or rainy or at night. I guess that's the way it was written?

Can only imagine how hard it was to schedule a shooting schedule if they were constantly in need of overcast/rain for all of the scenes over a 10-hour miniseries.

I'm sure a lot of that is digital effects added later.

in one word...spectacular. only way to describe this epic mini-series. these don't come along too often and this will be revered for many years to come. Spectacular.
that somewhat sedated ending was so powerful and the last look between John and Toranaga was perfect.

and, even though there wasn't any action, the power of their acting and the story made this particular episode beautiful.

Hiroyuki Sanada who plays Toranaga was just on GMA3 and talked about the show. he's also a producer, which i didn't know, but one thing i couldn't believe is that the entire series was shot in Vancouver. they wanted to shoot in Japan, but the pandemic nixed that. very good interview.

Great series.

FYI, in the book the battle gets a couple of sentences of a paragraph in the epilogue. The scene where Toranaga reveals his plan ,in the book it’s an inner monologue not to Yabu, is the ending.

Had a feeling they would change Fuji’s ending from the by some of the conversations she had and I was right.

This really took a disappointing turn around mid series and never recovered. The writing just wasn’t that sharp, with too many nonsensical turns. Beautifully shot, decently acted. Started strong but just couldn’t find its way.

Re: James Clavell's Shogun - Limited Series (FX) - premieres 2/27/24

Solid wrap up and overall fantastic series. I think Cosmo really shined in the finale. Especially his interactions with Toranaga. Fuji deciding to live a life as a Nun seemed like a good ending for the character and I liked the scene where she finally was able to say goodbye to her husband and child with the help of Blackthorne. They barely understood each other, but I loved her interactions with him.

This isn't hyperbole when I say this was probably one of the best series of the last 10 years. Also glad it was released weekly by Hulu like the FX airings. At least you had time to think about and digest each episode.

Re: James Clavell's Shogun - Limited Series (FX) - premieres 2/27/24

I've been a fan of the original Richard Chamberlain version and watched it at least 10 times since it first aired when I was a kid. I haven't started the new one yet but based on comments it sounds like they expanded on a lot more that was previously cut from the book but also somehow deleted a lot from the book as well. I was hoping that with more screen time this would have been a more complete depiction of the entire novel but I guess some things just dont translate to screen well.

Can anyone who has seen both versions offer a comparison of what was added and cut? I thought the original was a masterpiece as one of the first mini series events to ever air but it sounds like this is even better?

I too would say it’s the best, but Queen’s Gambit was just so addicting.

Clavell's daughter was on the podcast and said the bay where they filmed the the scene with Blackthorne and Fuji pouring the ashes into the water is the same bay where James Clavell's ashes were released.

Just binged it and it was good. It's totally set for a S2 but since it's a limited series, I guess this is all we will get. I get the final shot, but that was anti-climatic as hell.
