I'm sure this ep. will get some flack from people for being "filler", but I thought it was really well done. The lead actor was great and I think it was awesome that he got to share a scene with Anthony Hopkins. Showed us that what appear to be random background characters may actually have a part to play.

And yes, coincidentally, there was hardly any Dolores.

In a show full of LOST comparisons, we finally got our Nikki and Paulo episode.

I thought this was one of the best episodes of the run.

Really good episode that worked on multiple levels. The whole conceit that outsiders came and ruined their peaceful society, forced them to become violent, and stole away their loved ones is an obvious nod to the plight of the American Indians and the mythos of the noble savage that sprang up in the early 19th century. Can a "person" and a culture built almost purely on fiction stand on its own and become real? In a way this episode provided a much needed singular perspective for what all of the self-aware hosts are grappling with.

One of the show's best episodes. It was definitely not filler.

I've seen Zahn McClarnon, the American Indian actor, a lot lately: Just finished Fargo Season 2 (he was excellent in in it) and have been watching Longmire on Netflix.

Oh, and to save folks a Google search, the title of the episode - Kiksuya - means "remember" in Lakota.

Nice to see Julia Jones  She caught my attention in Wind River.

I read speculation that Maeve is gone for good. While I don't totally believe it, it does kind of make sense. I think the showrunners are trying to develop strong characters in the lesser known actors so the series can survive without the name ones. I would be shocked to see Ed Harris on much longer, and hopefully EVR will be making an exit at some time. Thandie Newton is not a super star, but she's still rather well known compared to other actors on HBO series.

Not enjoying this season but thought this was a standout episode.

It says a lot about season 2 that the best show of the season by far is a damn filler.

Maeve can't die, she made a promise. She's going cause a bison stampede through the Mesa to escape.

Here's a thought: if she can remotely send commands, can she remotely send her consciousness to another host? We saw a room of backup/old Bernards, are there any backups of Maeve's body? Or maybe she can get one 3D printed?

Not filler, but I did feel the monologue went on to long and wish they would have conveyed much of the same information more organically. The previous episode was pretty heavy on exposition as well. But that would be my only criticism. And I agree that Zahn McClarnon was fantastic.

This is what I was thinking. She could just jump to another host body. It appears she's within the system like Ford. Also convenient should the actress leave show.

I'm really torn about this episode. I thought it was well done and interesting, but to have it as the 8th of 10 episodes is a bit disappointing. There are two episodes left in the season and although I expect Zahn will be featured in the third season and beyond, it seems strange to introduce a deep dive into one character like that so late in the season.

It's a filler. Plain and simple. It was interesting, heck more than the season itself, that's the sad part.

I kind of hate the labeling of any episode that doesn't significantly advance the plot as "filler." This filled in some backstory and added some character development. Books have chapters like this all the time. It was a great episode, and I'm happy to have watched it.

Loved the episode, and loved the focus and reveal of a character we've seen for awhile now.

I do wonder if they pushed it to later in the season for when McClarnon was hospitalized.

BTW, how the fuck is this ep "filler"? I reject that label for this ep. I think some of you throw that term out way too much.

funkyryno 06-12-18 12:58 PM

Re: Westworld (S2E08) -- "Kiksuya" -- 6/10/18

I agree. A filler episode would be one that isn't relevant to the overall storyline and doesn't advance the plot forward. This episode certainly did both.

I stumbled across a Reddit Sunday night that had a lot of Native Americans posting in it. I was struck by how strongly the episode resonated with them. They largely viewed it as a fantastic thing and a proud emotional experience. It reminded me how important representation is and how it resonates with those of us in the various "minorities".

I had been browsing the Reddit app at the time and for some reason I missed getting the name of the sub. D-oh!

95% of the episode was on a minor character's back story that doesn't advance the story arcs. Doesn't mean it's a bad episode, it isn't. It's the best of the season I'd say, still is a filler and could have been cut without missing a beat on the main storylines.
