Unbelievably great episode of Television. So well done. My eyebrow was raised when I saw that Mark Mylod had directed this one, but I was still dumbfounded.
The way it was shot, where you, like the kids didn’t know exactly what was really going on, how you just like them had to listen to Tom and take him at his word. Wow.

The other thing I really liked is how they pretty much did it off screen.

I’ve never watched Buffy, but I’ve seen the rest, and I’m okay with this.

The entry barrier, as it were, is that almost everybody (everyone except Greg) is an asshole. Some people get turned off by a show where there's really nobody to root for. If you can roll with that, it's well worth watching.
I worship Alan Sepinwall and agree with almost everything he opines, but he HATES this show. So clearly it's not for everyone.
Victory!

I guess it is for everyone after all!

Sepinwall's description of Ken, Roman and Tom cracked me up

"These are three trash humans, each going through various stages of grief about the impending demise of the worst person on the planet. Yet in the moment, it is impossible not to feel for all of them."

Re: Succession (HBO) -- Series Thread -- S: Cox, EP: McKay, Ferrell, C: Armstrong

Blown away. The reactions of the kids was some of the best acting I’ve ever seen on TV. And I too thought it was a fake-out until they showed the flight attendant doing compressions. We’re that trained to see everything on TV. Comparisons to Buffy’s “The Body” are very apt.

Poor Greg has to go into the office to hide stuff again

Watching Kerry get kicked to the curb is gonna be great.

Also Kendall calling his assistant and saying “I’m just doing facts” is a fantastic way to handle a situation like this - I’m totally stealing that in real life.

I know it's his brain trying to deal with everything, but I loved him telling her to get "the best airplane medicine expert in the world"

Anyone else think they're going to reveal that Logan's heart attack was brought on from him banging Kerry?

Real dick move for Logan to test Roman's loyalty by having him axe Gerri. But that's small potatoes for Logan I guess.

I knew Conner was a good deal older than Willa, but I didn't realize Ruck is actually twice Lupe's age (66 vs. 33). Not sure if the characters are playing close to their real life age.
I thought Lupe was in her late 30's/very early 40s and Ruck was around Mathew Broderick's age - which would make the difference about 23 years instead of 33.
And Brian Cox is only 10 years older than Ruck.

Ruck mentioned Connor was supposed to be in his mid-50s.

Logan Roy about 84, having him around 30 makes sense.

Also has been pointed out, time is not moving as quickly on “Succession” as it has in real life.

Re: Succession (HBO) -- Series Thread -- S: Cox, EP: McKay, Ferrell, C: Armstrong

Still thinking about this one. What a fantastic feat of bait and switch. The entire series the conflict has been about who will “beat” Logan and become the chosen one, and now that choice is instantly taken away from them, setting up a lot of intersibling warfare to come.

Also so very impressed at the realistic way they handled the death and grieving, capturing the chaos, no over the top monologue or farewell speech by Cox, never ever really showing us Logan’s body - feels like every one of the cast earned an Emmy during that harrowing boat phone call scene, which was honestly a bit hard to watch for anyone who’s lost a family member.

Succession has been very very good for much of its run but this episode just took all that it’s built up and shattered expectations (all the cast were great, but seeing Shiv, always so in control, totally destroyed, was masterfully done by Snook). Amazing stuff.

Logan's 80th Birthday Party : Air date 6/3/2018
Logan's 84th Birthday Party : Air date 3/26/2023

So it's actually pretty close to real-time.

This was an all timer. Can't replicate the surprise factor. On another note, it seemed like most of it ended up happening in real time, from the phone call onward.

Did they say which birthdays those were?

The timeline is wonky. And not even Armstrong seems to care. For example, Connor got into the Presidential race at the beginning of Season 2 and the election hasn’t even happened yet.

Yes. The pilot was clearly his 80th.

And S4E1 was his 84th.

That episode worked so well because the audience is in as much denial as the children. The only question now is will this be considered the last "good" episode of the series...things are going to shift significantly in the remaining episodes.

It's crazy that "Saul Gone", "Long, Long Time" and "Conner's Wedding" will all be competing against each other for Writing, Directing and (I assume) Best Dramatic Series. I bet there's never been a tougher three-way stand-out episode contest in TV history.

I came close, I left Twitter a while ago due to Musk-rat but, saw a NY Times headline with a Cox interview about a “big twist” but fortunately they didn’t give it away in the headline like a lot of shitty clickbait sites I could mention. Was definitely a shocker.
