David Letterman not making an appearence on The Late Show since he retired.

Letterman appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live after he retired when Kimmel did a week in Brooklyn. When this happened I chalked it up to Kimmel being the world's biggest Letterman fan and the fact that it was a special week of shows in NY.

Now tonight Letterman is appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

It's starting to become suspicious to me as to why Letterman hasn't returned for a guest spot on the Late Show. Does Letterman have a problem with Colbert, does Colbert have a problem with Letterman, does Letterman have a problem with CBS. Has Colbert even invited Letterman on. Has he invited Letterman but been turned down. I can see maybe waiting awhile until Colbert gets his feet wet, but its been almost 3 years and he has the number 1 late night show. Colbert is established. I don't know, am I grasping at straws or is it bizarre that Letterman has come back for 2 other shows and not The Late Show?

I don't remember but did CBS try to push out Letterman, or did he retire on his own? I say that because Carson was sort of pushed out by NBC (I think he was making 30 million dollars a year and they wanted to clear that salary), and he was mad at that, and the fact that they picked Leno over Letterman who was clearly his protégé. I remember Ed McMahon went on Arsenio Hall, and then Carson read the Top Ten on Letterman as both were a jab at NBC when Leno was floundering in the early 90's.

These guys all have big ego's (partly the reason they are so successful) and maybe Letterman is jealous of Colbert that he is #1, and Letterman hadn't been #1 since 1995. In fairness to Dave, the landscape of Late Night has drastically changed since Trump was elected as it's a much more partisan era, and Colbert only started beating Fallon after Trump was elected and focused his show on a more MSNBC-like audience.

Re: David Letterman not making an appearence on The Late Show since he retired.

It got better by the final appearance, but they generally had pretty lousy chemistry when Colbert would be a guest.

Here's some late night talk from a Letterman interview from March of last year:

I know you said you don’t really watch the late-night shows, but do you have even an ambient sense of how Trump has been useful for guys like Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert?
People tell me nice things about Seth Meyers, that he’s good and thoughtful. But I mean, can you imagine not doing Trump jokes? That would seem bizarre.

What are your thoughts on Colbert?
Only just what you say, that a lot of people have been able to root themselves in the Trump tsunami, and Stephen is one of them. I’m aware that Stephen has been able to solidify his position, or — having not seen the show, I don’t know what the situation was prior. I can’t say much about these shows, because I just don’t watch them.

Are you not watching because you’re not awake at 11:30 or because you did it for so long that you’re no longer interested?
The latter is correct. Having done it for 30 years with this blind devotion to the project, and then having been a participant in the late-night wars,When Johnny Carson retired in 1992, he expected Letterman to host The Tonight Show. Leno got the gig, Letterman moved to CBS, and the two fought it out in the ratings for a decade. (Leno generally had the better numbers.) which, there’s no war now at all — and it was always me and Leno and me and Leno and me and Leno. I realize, Jesus, what was the matter with me? So, well … the truth is I can’t stay up that late.

I think Letterman also did Conan after he retired?

The late night wars are over if Fallon and Colbert pose with each other at the 2018 Met Gala.

I can't imagine anyone actually caring about this.

Btw that thread title is awkward and Klunky as heck.

Something saying he is actually finally appearing on a talk show might have been more appropriate

You wish you knew before right now about the fact that Letterman hasn't made an appearance on The Late Show? What a mundane thing to have interest in.

Well that’s the problem with the thread title. I was referring to the part about him appearing on the Seth Myers show not the part about him not appearing on the Late Show.

yeah it was late there was probably a better way to say it. Also, I don't "care" about it. It's not like I'm losing sleep over it. It's just interesting that he's made multiple late night talk show appearences since he retired, but hasn't made an appearence on the show he hosted for 20 plus years.

If Trump did not come along maybe James Corden is hosting the Late Show.

Watching James Corden is what I imagine drinking poison would be like.

I wonder why he is popular.

My James Corden impression -

" I just love your movie!" "I Love you so much!"

Have to agree. Can't stand James Corden, even his stupid singing in cars thing. One of the worst interviewers of all time (although he is a slight step above Leno, who was always atrocious when interviewing guests...Whether you like Conan or not, even if he has the worst guest, he always manages to salvage the interview...When Leno had a bad guest, it would just be awkward and unfunny)...

Re: David Letterman not making an appearence on The Late Show since he retired.

I'd rank the current crop of late night hosts as follows:

Seth Meyers
Stephen Colbert
Conan O Brien
Jimmy Kimmel
Trevor Noah
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
James Corden
Jimmy Fallon.

I haven't seen Sam Bee or Jordan Klepper's show.

I'd still rate Conan number 1 alltime over everyone I listed, it's just that his show has stagnated. His field pieces are still the best in the business though. But his format is worn out.

Conan is my all time favorite, too, but Jon Stewart would be a close second (I know their shows are very different and served different purposes)...I can only imagine what Stewart would've been able to do had his show continued to run during the Trump presidency...I think we've missed a lot since his retirement (but I understand his reasons, young children he get to see very often, etc.)...

Wow, either I forgot about that or never saw it. While he didn't read it, just brought it out it was still cool.

Re: David Letterman not making an appearence on The Late Show since he retired.

I guess I wouldn’t have necessarily expected him to appear. Dave seems like the type that doesn’t do things unless he really wants to, especially now that he’s retired. I don’t think he would go on just for the hell of it. Side note on Colbert, I know a lot of people like the guy a lot but I still don’t. I thought him hosting The Late Show and being more himself rather than a character would change my mind on him but meh.

His interview with Seth Meyers was pretty entertaining and how he said he could not do Trump jokes since Seth already has that covered and would do a better job..
