The upcoming DC digital service, which was just officially named DC Universe, has given a script-to-series order to Swamp Thing, a drama based on the DC characters created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. The project hails from James Wan’s Atomic Monster in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Contingent on a script, Swamp Thing is targeting a 2019 premiere on DC Universe, which is set for a launch later this year with the live-action Titans and animatedYoung Justice: Outsiders as its first two original series. Titans was supposed to be followed by Metropolis, about Lois Lane and super villain Lex Luthor. The live-action drama, which had a 13-episode straight-to-series order for a 2019 debut, will now be redeveloped.

DC Universe’s series to date headed to air include WBTV’s Titans, and Warner Bros. Animation’s Young Justice: Outsiders and Harley Quinn.

Written by Mark Verheiden (Ash vs. Evil Dead) and It co-writer Gary Dauberman, Swamp Thing centers on CDC researcher Abby Arcane. When she returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland — only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, both horrifying and wondrous — and the potential love of her life may not be dead after all.

Verheiden and Dauberman executive produce with Atomic Monster’s James Wan and Michael Clear, while the company’s Rob Hackett seres as co-producer.

Wein and Wrightson’s DC characters were the subject in the 1982 horror film Swamp Thing written and directed by Wes Craven and starring Ray Wise, Adrienne Barbeau, Louis Jordan and Dick Durock as Swamp Thing. It spawned a 1979 sequel, The Return of Swamp Thing .

This marks Verheiden’s return to the DC universe. He previously did stints as a writer-producer on Warner Bros. TV’s young Superman drama series Smallville and on Constantine. His comic book TV series credentials also include a tenure on Netflix’s Daredevil.

Wan, whose credits include the Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring horror franchises, is coming off a collaboration with DC Entertainment as co-writer and director of the upcoming Aquaman movie. He is repped by Paradigm, Stacey Testro International, and attorney David Fox. Dauberman, who is co-writing the sequel to the horror hit It, is repped by ICM Partners, Industry Entertainment, and Eric Suddleson.

Wan also confirmed his involvement on Instagram

This I’m very interested in. This DC streaming service is sounding more enticing with each announcement. I hope it’s not too expensive. I’m a fan of the Wes Craven film and the tv series that aired on USA. Plus the comics are cool too.

Hope they adapt some Alan Moore stories. And of course Wein and Wriightson.
Would love to see Patchworkman, General Sunderland, and Anton Arcane in the series.

Interesting choice. I wonder if Swampy will be all CGI or an actual costume.

And then you take a look at Starfire and your hopes are again crushed...

Sounds interesting as well (especially since James Wan's involvement hints at a horror-oriented approach). But not enough to subscribe to a DC streaming service :( Hopefully there will be other ways to see it if its good. Crossing my fingers it will be more like the comic series and less like the camp of the movies and tv series.

I love Alan Moore's run! I still have the entire "floppy" Volume 2 of Swamp Thing, starting with the movie tie-in (in 1982). I thought Mark Millar did some good stuff in the last 30 issues.

Is there any essential Swamp Thing post 2000? I haven't been following since then.

CGI makes sense these days. Swamp Thing costumes just look silly to me.

I think you could do Swamp Thing practically fairly easily and have it look good. My guess is it’ll be CG though.

I’m curious what this service will be priced at. On the one hand it’s all in-house WB/DC stuff so no licensing fees, but all these new shows probably aren’t going to be cheap. I still sorta think a strictly DC service is too niche and doing a WB service with DC included would make more sense. That way they could put other shows and movies they own on there (and make a few new ones) plus put the classic cartoons they own the rights to (essentially Boomerang and whatever else).

There's some weird time travel involved here that I don't quite understand. Regardless, I had no idea Wes Craven directed the first movie. Swamp Thing has actually been all over the place, he had those movies, he kind of kickstarted the whole Vertigo thing, he had a cartoon and toyline in the early 90s, he's in the current cartoon voiced by Luke Skywalker, and there are no less than two different toys currently in stores of him (my son has them both). Not bad.

As far as stuff worth reading, the New 52 series has been recommended, but it's still in my huge digital backlog. Scott Snyder started it off then Charles Soule took over, and both are great comic book writers.

Yeah, the Craven movie is pretty cheeseball but it’s sorta fun.

Swamp Thing also had a television series in the late 80s at one point. For whatever reason, Hollywood loves the character.

It's strange because he's a cult figure at best in comic book circles. I guess because his stories are more horror than anything else and you don't need the superhero stuff in his adventures.

Jennifer Beals is set for a key recurring role opposite Crystal Reed and Maria Sten on Swamp Thing, the upcoming streaming drama series based on the DC characters created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. The project, which hails from James Wan’s Atomic Monster in association with Warner Bros. Television, is set to premiere in 2019 on the DC Universe digital subscription service.

Written by Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman, Swamp Thing follows Abby Arcane (Reed) as she investigates what seems to be a deadly swamp-born virus in a small town in Louisiana but soon discovers that the swamp holds mystical and terrifying secrets. When unexplainable and chilling horrors emerge from the murky marsh, no one is safe.

Beals will play Sheriff Lucilia Cable. Tough as nails and pragmatic, Sheriff Cable’s fierce devotion to her son, Matt, is rivaled only by her sworn duty to serve and protect the town of Marais. As the community she has dedicated her life to defending is beset by strange forces, Lucilia must double down in her efforts to safeguard everyone she holds dear.

Wan, Verheiden, Dauberman, Michael Clear and Wiseman are executive producers alongside Len Wiseman who is set to direct.

Beals was last seen as Christina Hart, the female lead in NBC’s Taken, and recurring as Margo on Amazon’s The Last Tycoon. She recently joined the cast of After, the feature adaptation of Anna Todd’s series of five bestselling YA novels. Beals is repped by APA, and Felker Toczek Suddleson Abramson.

This is filming locally. The owners of my local comic shop were talking to some of the local crew and they said this is a straight up horror show and very dark. Can't wait.

Coming from Wan, I expected as much.

Interesting casting. Wonder who will play Dr. Woodrue (Floronic Man)?

Constantine guest appearance?

If they're going this route they really need to do an Animal Man series. So much they could do with that.

I read this book during its first run. I thought it was one of the better books at the time. I was into the really esoteric DC characters. Unfortunately those books didn't last long.

Some dealer earlier this year tried to hard sell me some Blue Devil comics (ive never read em, or cared much for him) He insisted he would be a hot character soon, and I laughed.
