Well that escalated quickly. If it doesn't come back for whatever reason, that made for a good enough series finale after a good season, but I'm happy it got renewed.

That was a good finale, but I do hope the renewal stands and we get another season. I wonder if they will actually keep it set in London, or come up with some way to bring them back to New York.
These last two episodes are a good example of one of the things I like about this show. It subverts expectations. They've been building up to a Sherlock vs Michael battle of wits all season, but instead of following the standard tropes and having some white-knuckle cat-and-mouse game between the two, the story abruptly--but logically--changes and creates a new, more complex conflict for Sherlock, Joan, and Gregson.

The writers on Twitter said that they wrote the episode as a series finale, just in case. I can see that.

I'm hoping they keep it set in London. And Moriarty eventually returns. Probably just as Sherlock and Watson finally start hooking up.

While they did subvert expectations, the way they just heel turned Gregson like that was bad. I understand that it had to be rushed as it was a possible series finale, but he deserved to be written better. Plus its still unknown if Detective loses his bid for the Marshall's service.
Oh and then there was the thread with Sherlock officially trying to date his 'scene helper' bang buddy. Pointless episode that was now.

Makes me wonder if they attempted to get Natalie Dormer to return, but she turned them down. Same with Rhys Ifans. So they just killed off Mycroft without the character making another appearance.

CBS’ modern-day Sherlock Holmes & Watson drama series Elementary will end its run with its upcoming 13-episode seventh season. The decision comes as the crime procedural, created by Rob Doherty and starring Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu, wrapped production Friday on Season 7 with the final scene in the finale the last one to film.

Sounds like they expected this upcoming season to be the last, so hopefully the writers were able to come up with a good 'ending'. Not that this series needs some kind of definitive conclusion, really, but I don't want any big mysteries left unresolved at the end.

I really enjoyed the first 3-4 seasons before I realized the showrunner was unwilling to mess with the formula at all. The mysteries did get lazier and lazier after the first two seasons.
Casting Natalie Dormer as Moriarity was a huge mistake. Once she was unwilling to come back for normal network scale, that removed a huge element of Sherlock's mythos from play.

I'm hoping "wrapping things up" translates to Natalie Dormer comign back for at leats one episode. The episodes with her involved were by the far the best of the series. As you would expect them to be given is equals the character of Moriarty being involved.
