Muppets Now (Disney+) -- premieres 7/31/20

Disney's forthcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service is going to be a prime hub for remakes, reboots and all manner of familiar IP, at least according to early buzz about its initial film and television slate.

Headed by OTT programming chief Agnes Chew, the as-yet-unnamed service — envisioned as a competitor to Netflix — will be a home for family-friendly fare including Marvel feature films and such TV series as a live-action Star Wars (with multiple variations already in the works, per CEO Bob Iger) and, sources tell THR, a reboot of The Muppets.

Disney acquired The Muppets Studio in 2004 and most recently attempted to revive Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and company on the small screen with a critically panned ABC comedy that was canceled after one season in 2016. A search for a writer for the new take is underway.

Also poised to be part of the TV slate, according to Iger, are reboots of star-maker High School Musical and a series based on Pixar's Monsters, Inc. A TV version of The Mighty Ducks, from the trilogy's original screenwriter, is also considered likely to land on the platform, sources say.

The Disney brand extension is expected to make a heavy push into film with an eye on Disney's robust library of family titles. The Parent Trap (1998), Father of the Bride (1991) and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989) are among the first projects on the table for potential film reboots, sources say.

Still to be determined, however, are the official launch date (sometime in fall 2019) and price point for the service, which is expected to bow domestically before expanding abroad.

Disney declined to comment.

I actually liked the most recent incarnation until they started tinkering with it. Then again, it was a step above “family fair”.

A new Muppets series and a Mighty Ducks series is enough to get me to subscribe.

The ABC series wasn't bad at all and pretty entertaining in the beginning. But ABC was unhappy with the showrunner from the very start and then ratings started tanking.

Cool. I've been wanting more from the Muppets to show my kids. Disney+ is shaping up to have a lot of content I'm interested in.

Without the last show we would never have gotten this brilliant clip. That alone makes it worth it.

Well, hopefully they'll tone it down from the recent ABC version or you might have to explain some of the jokes to your kids.

Fozzy: I put up a profile on a dating site that said "Furry guy looking for love". I didn't like the responses I got.

or

Scooter: Everyone be quiet, the meeting is about to start!
Floyd. Oh, sorry. Hi, my name is Floyd, and I'm...
Scooter: It's not that kind of meeting, Floyd

Same here...The Muppets work best when they have an adult "edge" to them. When they act more like Sesame Street characters, they're less interesting.

I haven't seen the ABC series yet, as I wasn't interested in the mockumentary aspect. I kind of forgot about, and haven't hunted it down. I don't mind some jokes going over their head, as long as it isn't constant. Ubiquity of double entendres only works for ACDC, and even then it can get a little tiring.

Disney+ is five months away from its launch and has already announced an abundance of TV Shows and movies with more than 25 original series and 10 original films… including The Muppets!

It has been fours years since The Muppets were on television and after reports of an original series set to release in 2020 called Muppets Live Another Day, Now, we have learned that Disney+ is developing another Muppets program in the form of variety shorts!

These Muppets shorts will be an unscripted series featuring three different segments of a game show, a cooking show, and a talk show (featuring an unnamed muppet girlfriend, gee wonder who that could be?) and each segment will be no longer than ten minutes.

As of now, there is no release date for the shorts yet, but it is likely they will debut with the service this November, as production is set to begin June 9, with a quick shoot through June 18th!

Disney has attempted to reboot the Muppets a couple of times in recent years including two movies and a TV series, plus some popular live shows in London and Los Angeles, plus a new daily show in the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World.

Unscripted?

Muppets in Cars Getting Coffee? Miss Piggy Car Karaoke? Gonzo's Amazing Race? Last Comic Standing featuring Fozzie Bear? The Muppet Voice w/ Janice, Floyd, Dr. Teeth and Animal as judges?

I kid, but I would totally watch all of these.

Sorry, Kermit: Disney+ is not moving forward with its planned revival of The Muppets, our sister site Deadline reports.

Actor Josh Gad, who was set to write the new series — titled Muppets Live Another Day — along with Once Upon a Time creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis, confirmed the news with a tweet on Monday, stating that they “have decided to step away from Muppets Live Another Day. Sometimes, creative differences are just that. We LOVE this franchise so much & truly wish them all the best.”

Muppets Live Another Day would have picked up right after the events of 1984’s The Muppets Take Manhattan, with Kermit gathering the old gang together once again to search for a missing Rowlf. The series was first reported to be in the works back in February 2018, and later earned a pilot order at the streamer.

The Muppets, of course, first broke through with the 1976-81 series The Muppet Show before launching a movie franchise. ABC attempted to bring them back in 2015 with a mockumentary-style sitcom titled The Muppets, but that was axed after just one season. Kermit and the gang, though, will still be seen on Disney+ in Muppets Now, an unscripted, short-form series first announced last month.

That's a shame...but at least there's going to be something with the Muppets, as they're going ahead with Muppets Now.

The top line of that is incorrect. While Muppets Live Another Day is killed, Muppets Now the "unscripted" short for series is moving forward
