I looked him up on IMDB and noticed he was on an episode of Grace Under Fire and The Drew Carey Show - both playing his "Coach" character Luther Van Damme. I didn't know they did any Coach cross-overs.

He was great in Coach. Still remember the episode where he makes the whole team take a train instead of flying because of a bad dream he had. “Clickity-clack, Clickity-clack!”

RIP. Loved him on Coach. He was great on The Middle. Hopefully they did something with him for the final season.

Yeah, he was great in Coach. I remember his guest starring role as an eccentric professor on Charles in Charge when I was a kid. He would yell out "Nobody knows how I feel!" when someone would rhetorically tell him that they knew how he felt. I think Charles once replied with "EVERYONE KNOWS HOW YOU FEEL!" and he replied with "NOBODY KNOWS HOW I... really?" The comedic timing always cracked me up. The fact that I still remember that fucking line is nutty since it was almost 30 years ago.

I was reading about his career and found out he turned down the role of Gilligan and also turned down an offer to replace Don Knotts on the Andy Griffith Show. Had he accepted either role, his career would have been much different. :rip:

About two years ago, I was on twitter and some folks were talking about how Dick Van Dyke had just tweeted a full frontal nude video of his brother. I couldn’t believe it so I made the mistake of clicking through to see if it was some kind of joke. It was not.
Dick Van Dyke’s wife tweeted the link to the video, which she labeled as something along the lines of “and now here’s Jerry in his birthday suit (warning NSFW)” Dick Van Dyke then retweeted this. And left it up for about a day. (Presumably it was his wife handling his social media, and maybe she and Jerry had some kind of argument and she did this to get even. But who knows?) The brief video showed Jerry Van Dyke in a swimming pool, yelling and babbling incoherently. And someone off-camera pointed out that he was nude, if I remember correctly. It was recent (he was definitely in his 80s) and left nothing to the imagination. It is branded in my memory. A bunch of people joked about it on twitter, but I was surprised that this didn’t make it to TMZ or something like that. It has been practically forgotten, erased from history. Which is only fair, Jerry didn’t deserve something like this to get out and put a tiny dent in his legacy in his later years. And it was mean of Dick’s wife to tweet it. But I just can’t shake how f***ing bizarre this was. RIP Jerry Van Dyke |

Yeah, Coach was a really fun show. I probably know him best from that. RIP.

I've always loved Dick Van Dyke, but was never a fan of Jerry. That said, may he RIP. |

Right before I read this thread that he had passed away ,I watched Coach,the pilot episode.

Once on Conan or Letterman, I tuned in just in time to see a young standup comic crash and burn. He was doing his routine, and he was awful. He didn't get one laugh from the audience. At the end of his bit, he walked across the stage, and Jerry Van Dyke was on the couch. Jerry was laughing until tears ran down his face. He said, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I've been there. You're up there and nothing works." It was one of the kindest things I've ever seen on late night television.

His character on Coach is one of the all-time great TV characters. Coach was one of those shows where the supporting cast were all funnier than the main leads.

If Jerry Van Dyke had done nothing but play Stacey Petrie his legacy as a hilarious comedic actor would have been cemented.
Fortunately, he did a heck of a lot of other stuff, too. ;) I always liked Jerry. He was absolutely hysterical on The Dick Van Dyke Show for the 4 episodes that he guested on. Rest in peace, Burford, rest in peace. |
