Great interview which mentions Roddenberry was the one that told George Lucas about the mistake he made with regards to Star Trek toys.

Really looking forward to more of these. The first batch really held my interest, even for toys I didn't care about (Masters of the Universe).

Yup, watched the Transformers one -- it was great. You forget that Cullen doesn't even sound like Optimus. The stuff about his brother was also touching.

Watched the Star trek one first, was pretty cool

Looking forward to Transformers

I've seen so many Lego documentaries so it will be interesting to see if there is anything new

Bit sad the intro says eight part documentary series

So even if it's a hit, there won't be any more ?

Watched the Trek and Transformers episodes so far and enjoyed them. The whole full circle between Hasbro and Takara is a really interesting story and I'm glad the episode tried to explain that (GI Joe -> Henshin Cyborg -> Microman -> MicroChange/Diaclone -> Transformers) along with the fact that Marvel had a large role in making this line as successful as it was.

Re: The Toys That Made Us -- Netflix docuseries -- 12/22/17

Watched the Transformers episode (1st episode I've watched of this series)

Good stuff and a lot of great backstory on how the toys and show came about. Really nice that they got Peter Cullen for an interview. Really interesting to hear how different his speaking voice is compared to Prime. Didn't realize that they came up with the entire backstory of the Transformers from U.S. comic writers.

Re: The Toys That Made Us -- Netflix docuseries -- 12/22/17

The Trek episode was good. I did not even know they had released so much Trek merchandise, nor did I ever give though to how the even/uneven films impacted the toys. Great stuff.

I think they should have had two episodes for Transformers given it's importance in toy fandom.

The backstory is great for one episode but they really only featured a handful of toys which was a shame, the entire Jetfire/Skyfire rights fiasco wasn't mentioned, not to mention they completely skipped the modern day Masterpiece and popular knock off market while begrudgingly giving credit to Michael Bay and his movies for continuing the brand.

They have already started filming at least 8 more. A few months back they were picked up for more and they showed a whiteboard with numerous blank titles that have not been filled in yet.

TMNT and My Little Pony are happening. I also know they interviewed the Rock for a Wrestling episode because he posted a message to them on FB about the show.

That will get changed. Originally the show was eight episodes and done, release dates split in half.

I'm not sure why they decided to re-title these four episodes S2 unless they decided to just release 4 at a time going forward.

What the hell was that thing? It creeped me the hell out once I noticed it. And I think she was stealing some of Barbie's plastic for her own use.

Edit: I guess I should have read the whole thread before asking.

Re: The Toys That Made Us -- Netflix docuseries -- 12/22/17

Wow I knew I would like this series but it's even better than I thought it would be. It's very interesting to not the personal human touch. I always kind of think of them as artists and toy makers but hearing it from the creator's own words really shows that they think of their work, and rightfully so, as their legacy and lifework. I can't imagine how good it must feel to know you had a hand in making some of these iconic toys that will live on past you.

Some of my favorite moments from the show.
  • The creator of transformers talking about how much Perceptor meant to him and the tribute that they gave him.
  • Seeing the very simple tools they used to make the diaclone toys
  • The story of Barbie was so much more fascinating then I thought it would be The one Hasbro employee that basically knocked out the story of the Transformers in a weekend. And then they kept asking him to keep producing.
  • Seeing how many times that Lego almost went under.
  • Seeing how the cocreator of Barbie led a playboy lifestyle

Re: The Toys That Made Us -- Netflix docuseries -- 12/22/17

I've watched Transformers and Star Trek. Here are my thoughts so far:

Star Trek: Had some interesting points. Seeing the parts about Mego, Roddenberry's marketing bltz, and how the uneven quality of the movies effected the toys was good. The stuff about Playmates and Galoob was also good. It fell apart though when talking about the 1701 figures and the Diamond Direct stuff. It was good but still somewhat weak.

Transformers: Was really, really good. The mention of the Gobots, the robot lines the Takara and Hasbro relationship, everything was real good stuff. Surprised the Michael Bay interview didn't air though. It made me interested in seeing a Power Rangers one now.

Have not watched Lego and Hello Kitty yet. On another note, it looks like they started filming for season 2 and one of the episodes is wrestling themed since they somehow were able to get The Rock to be interviewed for it.

Re: The Toys That Made Us -- Netflix docuseries -- 12/22/17

I've caught up, and for me Hello Kitty was easily my least favorite.

I've grew up playing with Lego and GI Joe predominantly (I had Star Wars figures when they came out with POTF in the 90s, and He Man but it didn't resonate like Joe and Lego), but I found just about each episode fascinating, but the Hello Kitty one I lost interest in and fell asleep while watching it last night.

Not sure if it just isn't an interesting back story, or lack of interest in the character or what (never had interest in Barbie but I felt that episode was more interesting).

Looking forward to more episodes - hell I wouldn't mind if they supersized some of these episodes a bit more

I agree, I've always been fascinated with Mego (I was born after they were around).

I wouldn't mind episodes about Super Powers or Secret Wars either - but I can see them maybe throwing together a superhero episode that would cover all the lines and releases in the 80s and early 90s

It seems like it would have been smart to interview Playmates people about TMNT while doing Star Trek, and we saw interviews from seemingly the same sessions across the first batch of episodes. My guess is they may have hit up the Mego guy with more questions while they were there.
