Following Ben around would have changed nothing. Sure they would have known he had an idol going into tribal, but Mike still would have gone home. It's not like they could stop him from looking for or finding the idol through sheer force of will. Following Ben around would have been a complete waste of time they should have spent looking for the idol themselves.

They had 6 on 1, 5 on 1 and 4 on 1 advantages. Rotating someone to follow him a couple hours per person when you literally have nothing to do chilling on an island takes very little effort. You encumber his search to slow him down and, hell, possibly find it yourself. Waste of time? It's for a million dollars and what else did they have to do? Yeah, he could have still found them anyway but literally no reason not to try to cockblock him - they were just lazy and complacent and didn't realize production would make them so easy to find.

Don’t get me wrong, I completely agree they should have been looking themselves, but were too lazy, complacent, overconfident, etc. I’m just saying that specifically in the final episode someone shagging around after Ben ultimately would not have made a difference so I don’t know why people are making a big deal about it.

Idol plays, and the time leading up to tribal, can go FAR differently when everybody knows a person has the idol and the idol holder knows the whole island knows they have it. That's the point of putting somebody on Ben at all times.

If they had known, then Mike would have been voted out. Oh wait, that's exactly what happened.
