The Office Revival Eyed at NBC

NBC is getting ready to put pen to paper on a revival of The Office.

Sources confirm to TVLine exclusively that the Peacock network is eyeing a continuation of the beloved workplace comedy for the 2018-2019 season. The revival would once again be set at Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton, PA., branch, and feature a mix of new and old cast members. Steve Carell, who starred as the branch’s regional manager, Michael Scott, for seven of the comedy’s nine seasons, will not be involved in the new series. The search for a new RM/boss is said to be already underway.

NBC declined to comment on or confirm any details of this story.

Roughly a month before NBC’s successful relaunch of Will & Grace, network president Bob Greenblatt revealed to reporters that his revival wish list included The Office (as well as 30 Rock). “We often talk about The Office,” the exec told our sister site Deadline. “I’ve talked to Greg [Daniels] four times over the past few years. It’s always, ‘Maybe someday, but not now’. There is certainly an open invitation, but we don’t have anything happening right now. If he wants to do it, I would do it.”

NBC’s Will & Grace revival has been a critical and commercial success for the network. Last week, the sitcom even landed multiple Golden Globe nominations (including for Best Comedy Series).

Did anybody (outside of maybe the cast member's immediate families) think that show ended too soon?

Well we know who won’t be returning so I’m guessing the “old” cast will consist of Phyllis and the guy that played Kevin.

Will and Grace had a 12 year window between the original and now. The Office went off the air in 2013. And it had a great finale that wrapped everyone up perfectly.

This is a dumb fucking idea.

It’ll be a female boss. Probably Melissa McCarthey... or Kristen Wiig. But maybe we’ll get lucky and it’ll be Amy Poehler.

I must be in the minority. I thought that seasons 8/9 were very good and better than 5-7 w/ Carrell. I'll be watching this for sure.

Well, their two current shows (Superstore and the now canceled Great News) are essentially The Office in disguise anyway...so sure.

I stopped watching this show at some point in its run. Forget what season per se but I think it was played out. I get remaking movies but this new trend in resurrecting sitcoms is really pathetic.

At this point, nearly everything fails. An existing property is more likely to succeed as it has a built-in audience and brand recognition.

Look at X-Files and Will and Grace. Im sure Roseanne will do modest ratings for ABC as well.

I was sick of Carrell by the time he left. There were some decent episodes in Season 8 and 9. I especially liked Spader. But the quality still lacked. What once was a fantastic comedy turned into a shell/ self-parody of itself.

I was happy with the series finale though.

I was satisfied with how it concluded but, yeah, I would watch more.

Especially if it still had Jenna Fischer.

This is a bad idea. It hasn't been long enough for nostalgia to kick in, and the show was running on even before Carell left.

My guess is that the show would be headlined by Rainn Wilson. I don't know how you could explain Jim and Pam moving back to Scranton. Plus, Kasinski is pretty busy these days.

re: The Office Revival Eyed at NBC

I liked The Office a lot at first but I felt like it ran out of steam long before it originally came to an end (I gave up sometime during season five). It had a decent finale and honestly without characters like Michael, Jim, Pam, and Dwight I donít care that much. The side characters are good as just that but need stronger leads to play off of.

Like others have said itíll probably be Creed, Kevin, Stanley, Phyllis, and Toby. Curious who else theyíll get to lead the show.

re: The Office Revival Eyed at NBC

I loved the Office right up until the last season when they completely went off the rails. Having Jim and Pam almost divorce is just NOT the dynamic of that show. I don't know how they managed to lose sight of that. Plus they fucked up Andy by blowing all the good will his character built up, because Ed Helms had to leave to shoot Hangover. Also the cold opens were getting REALLY stupid. There were times over the span of the show that they went too over the top, like how unbelievable they made Creed when he became boss, but they always managed to reel everything back in.

My guess is that everyone will return except for Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Ed Helms and Ellie Kemper. Whoever said it will be headlined by Rainn Wilson I think was spot on. Especially since he was ready to film a spin off anyhow.

I'll watch. I don't know that its a great idea though.

re: The Office Revival Eyed at NBC

Television is really scraping the bottom of the barrel when they revive a show that ran almost ten seasons and just ended a few years ago.
