Carl got bit by a walker. It was pretty obvious when I happened. Gimple even mentioned on Talking Dead after the finale that they were afraid it was too noticeable.

He's going to die on the mid-season premiere. All of this speculation is just pointless. People are giving this show way too much credit.

This seems to happen all the time on the walking dead but how can the zombies teeth realistically penetrate this jackets or multiple layers of clothing and infect their victims? Zombies teeth are still human teeth, just much weaker and more rotten. If they are more rotten, they would much more likely fall off the jawbone of the zombie than it would penetrate several layers of clothing when they try and eat living people.

but here is an easy theory in which Carl can "die" and come back a season or two later. Not saying I think they are going this route but it's an easy way to give Chandler riggs time off the show and the opportunity to come back later.

Spoiler:
Carl gets an infection from the saliva of a human whisperer which may appear to have some of the initial same effects as a zombie bite.
Carl decides he wants to die alone rather than in his dad's presence.
He was planning on leaving in the last episode.

Carl leaves and walks off deep into the woods to die. The camera shows him walking off into the "sunset" and the episode ends there with everyone assuming he will die shortly.

This could happen off camera and be revealed a year or two later... Instead of dying, he is kidnapped by the Whisperers. He eventually heals from the infection and lives. He could be held hostage for a season or two off camera. If Riggs decides to return to the show, you simply show him coming out of the shadows after some type of battle during a mid season or season finale.
Yeah.. that's not a bad theory, but
Spoiler:
the walker that bit Carl looked like an actual zombie and not a guy wearing a walker skin. In the comics, it's pretty easy to spot a whisperer when they aren't in a herd of walkers where they tend to blend in, but up close you can usually see the "dead skin mask" they are wearing.

True, the way the scene is filmed and edited you never get a really good look at the walker that bit him, but from what we do see, there are no visible eye or mouth holes.

The following image (spoilered for size) is the connecting alternate covers for the "Whisperer War" arc and was drawn by Art Adams and not series regular Adlard, but it illustrates how the whisperers blend into a herd of walkers. In this image, the whisperers can be easily identified because they are holding weapons.

Spoiler:

Off topic but...
I love Art Adams but his style is so wrong for the walking dead.

I was expecting Carl's bite wound to look more necrotic than it did... it did just look like a simple human bite.

Spoiler:

Just speculation, but we don't necessarily know that this was the scene in which he was bit. We are assuming it was, however it could have happened off screen. it could have been at some point after that.

This may be just an error or oversight, or just simple suspension of belief, but as I said above, zombie teeth are still human teeth, but much weaker. They don't turn into vampire or werewolf teeth. Human teeth can't pentrate one or two layers of clothing to cause the injury on Carl in the final scene of the episode.

also after the 'kill" those zombies in the woods, you can see Carl standing up facing Sidig and in the spot where Carl should have been bitten, his t-shirt is very clean. There are no tears to the clothing in that spot. Nor are there any stains. If the zombie sunk his teeth into Carl's flesh, than his teeth would therefore have needed to go through his t'shirt as well. But there are clearly no marks on it. Again this may be something that should be overlooked like when aliens in Star Trek always speak English.

Stupid but...

why would a Whisperer be hanging out with a Walker and attack Carl? What's the point?

I'm fully expecting another "dumpster" incident... with the off-screen drama being part of the package to sell the notion that Carl is going to die.

considering the shit fit Chandlers Dad had on twitter over the story line this would be (yet another) huge slap in the face of the fans if this is another dumpster dive.

IDK if I care one way or another about losing Carl at this point. His story lines haven't been the strongest and considering how weak things are already it may be good for him to move onto a new project...
