Jim Nabors aka Gomer Pyle dead at 87

Jim Nabors, who gave popular culture its most enduring image of a wide-eyed, good-natured if none too bright hayseed in a character whose very name – Gomer Pyle – would become synonymous with lovable rube, died Thursday in Hawaii. He was 87.

The news was first reported by Hawaii News Now.

Aww, that sucks. We should all be so lucky to die in our late 80s in Hawaii.

I doubt anyone in this forum watched him on The Andy Griffith show or Gomer Pyle USMC live unless you're between age 60-70.

I remember him from seeing some of Gomer Pyle in syndication in the 1980s as a kid and his various TV appearances through the years. RIP. He lived a pretty long life and I'm also envious he got to live his Golden years in Hawaii.

He was a member of my canoe club in Waikiki. He seemed like a nice guy -- maybe a little flamboyant , but nice. He was friends with Carol Burnette and I saw them dining there together on occasions.

Also he's an Indiana icon for his "Back Home in Indiana" performances which he did before the Indy 500 for many, many years.

They play the old black and white episodes of Gomer Pyle USMC in reruns at 4 AM. I don't like sitcoms, and I haven't watched an episode all the way through, but Jim Nabors was absolutely convincing as a genuinely nice guy. I'll watch five minutes of an episode, and I'll feel touched. It's impressive.

If you didn't love Jim Nabors, you didn't love life itself. RIP :(

Man RIP. Watched him in Andy and his own show, in re-runs growing up. I have both complete series on DVD too.

I always liked his cameo in Cannonball Run II . He did some good work with Burt Reynolds.

Nabors actually had a great voice and had a music career that is now almost entirely forgotten. I imagine anyone younger than the Baby Boomers is unfamiliar with his trademark "Shazam" utterance.

Back Home Again in Indiana will be sung loudly with some sadness for the 102nd Indy 500.

Thanks Jim Nabors for so many great memories.

I loved the show when I was a kid. It always played back to back with the Andy Griffith show. Sgt. Carter always cracked me up when he was pissed off at Gomer. RIP

Seemed like a pretty good dude, especially given the likely great quantity of unwanted attention he received wherever he went considering how recognizable he is and for really only one particular role that everyone thinks they can impersonate flawlessly.

Him and Milburn Drysdale are two of the all-time underrated supporting actors in a comedy series.

He had a variety show if anyone remember that. He always end the show with singing Tomorrow Never Comes.

RIP Jim Nabors

He had variety tv specials also. He was a pretty big tv star in his day. I'm old enough to remember watching Gomer Pyle original airings on CBS Friday nights.

Popular schoolyard joke at the time:

What's brown and lies in the forest?

Spoiler:
Gomer's pile

I am sure many people like me in their 30's only knew he was a singer from the line on The Simpsons about him having a voice like an angel.

I remember watching "Gomer Pyle" in its original run.

Does anyone besides me remember the rumor, which was spread sometime in the 1970s, that Nabors had married Rock Hudson? Wasn't true, of course--"Two men marrying? Impossible!"--but it was the first inkling most of us had that either one of them was gay.

I was a kid in the 70's and remember hearing that rumor. As a kid I didn't understand it, but looking back as an adult, the rumor was floating around long before either one came out.

I enjoyed his run on TAGS and Gomer Pyle. I still watch Andy in the evenings but haven't seen an episode of Gomer in ages. RIP

Not quite 60 but still remember watching both shows as a kid. Obviously too young to have known but I recall hearing both Jim Nabors and Paul Lynde had been called the first openly gay actors. Not sure who actually can claim the prize but even at a that young age it was pretty obvious they were both pretty flamboyant. Of course that is partly what made them funny and likeable.

Another actor from my childhood takes the permanent dirt nap. At least this wasn't a "gone too soon" scenario. He lived a full life and had 40 years with his partner. We should all be so lucky.
