Meth Storm - HBO Documentary

Not sure if anybody caught this on HBO this week but it's amazing. Basically the crew follows several addicted, small-county Arkansas people and the DEA trying to clean up the town. It's sad and fascinating and shows how truly bizarre the addiction is (parents shooting up their kids). I highly recommend this for anybody who digs documentaries.

I watched it. I love stuff like this, but I wish they spent a little more time covering the police side. After awhile watching them get this constant fix in their filth got old. I wish the documentary crew went to Mexico and try to find out themselves where the supply was coming from. It felt like 90 minutes of following an addict around for days on end.

It did feel like the DEA is just doing the Groundhogs Day thing... you bust low level dealers but you can't find the guys delivering 40lbs / week?? I don't think they want to fix the problem; it's a revolving door of addicts running thru the system.

It's a demand problem, not a supply one. If you arrest the 40lbs/week guy another 40lbs/week guy will take his place. Or the other guy who was doing 40 will now do 80. Demand does not go unmet.

I've seen news stories on TV where they confiscated "27,229 pounds of marijuana, 9,512 pounds of cocaine, 705 pounds of methamphetamine, 11 pounds of heroin and $45.2MM in cash", but what I haven't seen is someone who wants it saying, "I can't find any," for any sustained period of time. There are temporary blips as the ecosystem shifts and adjusts, but that's about it. No lasting harm.

I think they do want to fix the problem, they just know arresting dealers won't do it, and fixing demand is a greater problem than anyone is equipped to deal with. The arrests they do make can serve several purposes, but none of them is, "Eliminate the drug problem."

I've recorded the show but I haven't watched it. It sounds depressing and I have to be in the right mood.
