About time!
Any theories on what happened with Gabriel? I think when him & Negan were making their escape & the walkers came at them right before it cut to commercial Negan used him as a shield and he got bit.

While N & G were in trailer getting ready to "gut up" Negan was talking about getting sick from the zombie guts. Sounds like they were foreshadowing Gabriel getting sick from the zombie crud he was covered with.

"We could end this tonight!"
"No. We have to milk this Negan thing until at least the end of the season."
"Well that's your choice. I'm going to go end it all right now so we can all live in peace!"
"I can't let you do that."

At least they didn't drag out the Rick v. Darryl fight itself over multiple episodes. I was pretty sure that was going to happen and was grateful when it ended after one commercial break.

Surprised to see this is the only mention of what could possibly be the first sign of a very significant turn of events coming down the pike. No comics info or any spoiler, but interesting that they just kind of threw that in there and moved on. Isn't that the first sign of anything beyond the reach of the Rick/Negan groups? Sort of a reminder to Rick that what seems like an all-consuming conflict and world war type event could actually be a piece of small potatoes community theater? Could even be the germination of season 9.

Re: The Walking Dead (S8E05) -- "The Big Scary U" -- 11/19/17
I doubt TPTB on TWD would consider this a filler episode since it gave the people who cared (NOT ME) "important" info on Negan's background, and introduced the idea that smearing oneself with walker innards can make a person sick. It also gave us a glimpse that someone in this new world can fly a chopper. And there were some comments thrown in about Simon and the history of the saviors pre Negan that could be mined for meaning.
So while I didn't care for this episode AT ALL, I don't really think it qualifies as filler. Not like the cheese maker episode, for example. That's the one by which all crap episodes must be measured.

it wasn't the worst episode of the season or the series. In fact I feel that having the scenes with Gabriel in the trailer and getting Negan's back story may be setting up the comic book plot line someone mentioned
Still this leaves me feeling the show is wanting. It's now just a show I watch and don't feel it's anything special.

I don't get why Walking Dead is so stingy with showing back stories or flashbacks. We only got a small nugget into Negan's backstory and that's probably all we will get. I would have love to see a full on Lost style flashback digging into his past and seeing how he became such a monster.

Well I liked this episode - It is a good perspective to see how the other groups live, operate, their rules, values, what drives them, etc. We got a little bit of that, and I hope we get more.
I too, enjoy Negan - you never know if he will fly off the handle, or if he is making sense - we see that his style is exactly what is needed within his group.
It is also nice to see that rubbing zombie guts all over you has some consequences - thus that is why it is not used frequently to escape from walkers. I wish they did a little bit more "acting" to show how vile the smell was. If I was asked to rub $hit and rotting guts all over me.. I would be gagging, dry heaving, eyes watering etc. But we will see if he is sick from the guts, or he was used as a shield.

'The Walking Dead’ Ratings Fall To Lowest Result Since 2011
Any episode of The Walking Dead that finds close pals Rick Grimes and Daryl Dixon scrapping is already problematic. Add a new empathetic angle to villain Negan and helicopters hovering over the zombie apocalypse and you have a clearly special show of the AMC blockbuster series.
However, with all that and a rising Sunday Night Football and the American Music Awards on NBC and ABC, the November 19 TWD ended up with a very different type of distinction. The Season 8 “The Big Scary U” episode fell a six-year ratings low for the series based on Robert Kirkman’s comics.
Or, to do the math, with a 3.4 rating among adults 18-49, TWD had its worst result since November 20. 2011. That Season 2 “Secrets” episode drew a 3.1 among the key demo. Week to week, TWD was down 13% among the key demo.
In a season that has seen TWD stumble in live + same day results since its October 22 premiere, the fifth episode of Season 8 didn’t do much better viewershipwise. Snagging an audience of 7.9 million, Walking Dead had the least sets of eyeballs since the penultimate episode of Season 2 on March 11, 2012. While not the least watched episode of the season, that “Better Angels” ep had 6.89 million viewers. Looking back to the November 12 TWD, the November 19 episode declined 10% in viewers.
On the Live + 3 metric, TWD has seen lifts of around 40% over the first four episodes of this season, a fact that keeps AMC smiling.
Hopefully with more calm between Andrew Lincoln and Norman Reedus’ characters, The Walking Dead will break for its winter finale on December 10. The series will be back early in 2018 for the rest of the All Out War tale.

I knew some one would post that. One of the biggest football games all year? Check. Some music awards show? Check.
Means nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Last year, the Cowboys/Giants game ("Americas Team vs Huge market) battling out for first place late in the season aired the same night as a WD episode - yet this latest episode had even worse ratings. And surely there were other "big games" and events that aired during TWD in the last few years.
People are tuning out because the show is getting worse. Anecdotally, I know a lot of people who bailed on the show. I may be the only one I know watching it now actually.
