This the stupidest idea ever.
What more is there regarding LOTR after PJ's magnificent movies?
If Amazon wants a long running big budget series of a similar nature, they should buy the rights to Dune, and have Denis Villenueve (currently writing a screenplay for the 1st novel) oversee the project.
There are 6 books that could easily be made into a 10 year series.

Frankly, if you must do LOTR I would like to see a different vision of it and definitely not have it in Jacksons world, despite how much I liked the LOTR movies themselves.
The Wheel of Time is almost as popular as LOTR and GOT and could make an awesome long term series if done well. Mistborn would be a great series. So many other great choices but Hollywood only knows Tolkien and Dune.

Uhhh. Of all the source material there is to cover this is what they're going to do? I don't even recall young Aragorn even being mentioned anywhere in the other books like the Silmarillion. That said I never really made it that far in the Lost Tales books, I found them pretty boring.
I hope it's good. I'll keep my expectations low.

I have a feeling this won't be ready until 2021 at the earliest. No one has been cast, no showrunner, directors have been hired.
This is a pretty ambitious and expensive project for Amazon. They're going to make sure they don't fuck it up and rush it out. Would not surprise me if it's even pushed back to 1st quarter of 2022.

Has Peter Jackson passed on this or would he be interested in at least being an EP?

As of December, he said he will help in an unofficial capacity (as of now) and look at scripts.
and according to this article, they do actually have 2 showrunners already.

Did we ever figure out if this will be new material or just re-adapting the same story the movies covered?

Look a few posts up, it's young Aragorn. He was 89 (I think) in the LOTR, so it could be around the time of the Hobbit but I doubt Amazon would have the rights to cover those specific events, so they may be showing stuff around those events.

With 1B, they have to achieve the look of the other movies. I was a little worried this was going to be like Agents of Shield to the MCU.
Now if if they can capture the feeling of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I’m skeptical. But I’ll stay optimistic.

My first thought when I saw the thread title was Baby Hobbits: Adventures in the Shire. I was being cynical, but I turned out to be close.
Instead, they're going with Young Aragorn. It surely will be a high-ratings television show like The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, Merlin (2008), and Smallville! Because everyone wants to watch extra stories about their favorite heroes as teenagers.
I was hoping for the tale of Beren Halfhand and Luthien Tinuviel.

The latest I’ve heard is that it won’t be about young Aragorn and instead be set in the Second Age, which is thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
But before that, I read that whatever rights Amazon acquired from the Tolkien estate didn’t include The Unninished Tales or The Silmarillion.
Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
I’m not sold on a young Aragorn series because I don’t think much happened to him before the War of the Ring.

Possible stories: Inheriting a broken sword from his father and flashbacks of its history; walking a long distance and thus earning the name Strider; first meeting with Gandalf; a budding romance when he meets and falls in love with Arwen; and that time he performed a great deed and earned the respect of Elrond.

^ For a billion dollars I would want to see shit like Numenor sinking, the Breaking of the World, or the War of Wrath with armies of Elves fighting hordes of dragons and balrogs.

EXCLUSIVE: Amazon Studios’ high-profile The Lord of the Rings TV series has made a key hire.Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom director Juan Antonio (J.A.) Bayona has been tapped to direct the first two episodes of the big-scope fantasy drama, following in the footsteps of Peter Jackson, who directed the feature adaptations of the classic J.R.R. Tolkien novels.
Set in Middle-earth, the series will explore new storylines preceding Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring.
“J.R.R. Tolkien created one of the most extraordinary and inspiring stories of all time, and as a lifelong fan it is an honor and a joy to join this amazing team,” said Bayona. “I can’t wait to take audiences around the world to Middle-earth and have them discover the wonders of the Second Age, with a never before seen story.”
Bayona also will executive produce alongside his producing partner Belén Atienza.
The Lord of the Rings series is written by feature scribes JD Payne and Patrick McKay. They lead a writers room, which is believed to include Breaking Bad alumna Gennifer Hutchison and Game of Thrones veteran Bryan Cogman, among others.
“We are thrilled to have J.A. and Belén joining the fellowship as we continue to develop this epic series,” said Payne and McKay. “We have been great admirers of J.A.’s work for years, and know that his epic, cinematic and deeply heartfelt aesthetic is the perfect sensibility to bring Middle-earth to life anew.”

Bezos desperately wants Prime to compete with Netflix and HBO so he’s throwing a shit ton of money at this show. If CBS can do a movie quality show like Star Trek Discovery I see no reason why with a big enough budget Amazon can’t do the same.

God no. There is much more to Sci-Fi/Fantasy than LOTR and freaking DUNE. I think Dune has been a colossal failure in every incarnation ever. If Villeneuve;s Dune is anything like his last 2 movies it will be a bore fest.
Frankly, if you must do LOTR I would like to see a different vision of it and definitely not have it in Jacksons world, despite how much I liked the LOTR movies themselves.

More fantasy is always good. Just as long as it doesn't turn out like the Shannara garbage that was on MTV.
