I watched Soap a bit but I knew Robert Guillaume more so from Benson. His barbs with Inga Swenson were great.

:rip: Benson

Mostly before my time, but recall watching some Benson in the late 80s during summer breaks. I enjoyed the characters, but don’t recall much about it. Think it was very episodic.

I was a big fan of Benson in junior high / high school for some reason. RIP.

Guillaume had a stint on Phantom of the Opera.

He was actually pretty good from the clips I've seen.

Yeah, I liked Benson too as a kid. Not sure why I watched it, since I wasn't obviously the demographic, but I enjoyed it. He was a good actor.

Benson is the main thing I know him from and like someone said earlier Soap was just before my TV watching time so while I knew his character came from Soap I remember him from Benson. RIP

Yeah, he was great until that stroke. He was never the same, unfortunately. Rip.

All the shows were episodic back then.

As much as I enjoyed Soap and Benson, that short stint on Sports Night bested them both for me.

But personally what really comes first when I think of him now is the voice work he did for Rafiki over the years. I've seen many different takes on the Lion King after hearing his voice work n the first movie and now each person playing that character just does their best Robert Guillaume impression.

 to Sports Night & Rafiki

I rewatch Sports Night almost every summer. Rafiki wasn't a main character but the little voice work Guillaume had, he made it his own and was quite memorable on its own.

Between new episodes of Benson and syndicated episodes of Soap, Guillaume was a fixture of my youth. I watched a Soap/Benson reunion on youtube last year. It was from some smaller day time TV show. The way Guillaume looked this isn't really a surprise, but he was a talented man nonetheless.

Loved Soap - got into that a while ago. Of course he was by far the best part. Pretty sure I bailed when he did, and have been meaning to do a rewatch. Still have yet to see Benson.

Listened to him sing as the Phantom of the Opera on Youtubr (but didn’t know about that vid in this thread, gotta see him in action), and also, not too bad in Meteor Man. Obviously Rafiki as well.

Benson, Soap & Sports Night. I think I have some episodes on DVD of all 3 series and have yet to view any of them.
