Magnum PI (reboot)

'Magnum P.I.' Reboot in the Works at CBS

Peter Lenkov, who is behind CBS reboots 'Hawaii Five-0' and 'MacGyver,' is penning the script alongside Eric Guggenheim.

CBS is revisiting Magnum P.I.

The network has handed out a sizable pilot-production commitment to a reboot of the Hawaii-set Tom Selleck cop drama.

The new Magnum P.I. is being written Peter Lenkov and Eric Guggenheim, who also are behind the network's Hawaii Five-0 reboot. (Lenkov, for his part, serves as showrunner on both Hawaii Five-O and the network's MacGyver reboot.)The Blacklist producers John Davis and John Fox will exec produce via their David Entertainment banner. The potential series is a co-production between CBS Television Studios — where Lenkov is based — and Universal Television, with the latter having produced the original series.

The new Magnum is described as an update of the original. It follows Thomas Magnum (Selleck's former role), a decorated ex-Navy SEAL (also like the original) who, upon returning home from Afghanistan, repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator. With help from fellow vets Theodore "TC" Calvin and Orville "Rick" Wright, as well as that of disavowed former MI:6 agent Juliet Higgins, Magnum takes on the cases no one else will, helping those who have no one else to turn to. Action, adventure and comedy aside, Magnum P.I. will also explore a brotherhood forged by the trauma of combat, what it means to return home an ex-soldier, and a commitment to continuing to serve while in the private sector.

The news comes as CBS and CBS Television Studios are also home to Selleck, who stars in Friday staple Blue Bloods. The actor is not attached to the Magnum reboot, though given his connection to the network, it's not hard to see a cameo should the drama move forward.

ABC tried its hand at a Magnum reboot last year, with the Disney-owned network's version serving as more of a sequel and revolving around Magnum's daughter. Eva Longoria and John Rogers (Leverage) produced the Universal Television entry.

Originally created by Donald P. Bellisario and Glen A. Larson, Magnum P.I. launched in 1980 and ran for eight seasons on CBS.

Reboots continue to remain in high demand this development season as broadcast, cable and streaming outlets look for proven IP in a bid to cut through a cluttered landscape of more than 450 original scripted series. Also in the works this season are reboots of Blue Crush (NBC), Nancy Drew (NBC), Roswell(The CW), The Nice Guys (Fox), True Lies (Fox), The Jetsons (ABC), The Munsters (NBC), Starsky and Hutch (Amazon) and Party of Five, the latter of which is currently being shopped. Key to the remakes is having the original producers involved in some capacity — which Magnum has with Universal — as more studios look to monetize their existing film libraries.

Lenkov, who also scored a second season for his CBS summer drama Salvation, is repped by CAA and Del Shaw; Guggenheim — whose brother Marc Guggenheim is adapting True Lies for Fox — is with ICM Partners.

Article doesn't say if the Magnum reboot would also be set in Hawaii or not.

I could see if H50 were to come to an end this season should O'Loughlin want out, this could pick right up with the same Hawaii crew to fill that time slot. Maybe that's what CBS is anticipating?

Pilot officially ordered at CBS. Also a Cagney and Lacy Pilot ordered that will take place in Los Angeles.

The reboot insanity continues.

No actor has been cast yet as Magnum. That's going to be a tough one.

The problem with rebooting these star vehicles is that it wasn't the idea of the show that was good; it was the charismatic lead actors. That's why the Rockford Files reboot didn't work. The original worked b/c it starred James Garner. Magnum PI worked b/c it starred an in his prime Tom Selleck.

They should’ve went with the daughter sequel series idea.

Rockford Files never aired. They shot a Pilot with Dermot Mulroney, but it was never greenlit to series.

Because it didn't work. The Rockford Files premise was just a detective show. There have been plenty of those. What made the Rockford Files work as a show was James Garner. It's hard to replicate that by slapping the same name on something. Magnum PI faces the same kind of problem.

Can I add Person of Interest to the reboot list starring all of the original actors? It's a shame it was canceled in the first place.

Dermot Mulroney was a horrible pick. There were rumors for a while that they were going go with Josh Holloway, whom I thought would have been perfect for that role. Missed opportunity.

Although, I can sorta see Holloway as Thomas Magnum. He just needs the porn'stache. ;)

It really saddens me that they couldn't pull off the motion picture that could have ended the Selleck run on Magnum and finally deal with Higgins/Robin Masters... especially now, after Hillerman's death at the end of last year.

Re: Magnum PI (reboot)

CBS has found its modern-day Magnum.

Jay Hernandez (Scandal, Last Resort) has nabbed the title role in Magnum P.I., the Eye net’s in-the-works reboot of the classic ’80s action-drama. He succeeds Tom Selleck, who played the iconic private eye during the series’ original CBS run.

Hernandez’s Thomas Magnum is a decorated ex-Navy SEAL who, upon returning home from Afghanistan, repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator. Reboot vet Peter Lenkov (Hawaii Five-0, MacGyver) penned the pilot along with his fellow Five-0 writer Eric Guggenheim. Fast & Furious‘ Justin Lin will handle directing duties.

Hernandez’s TV resume also includes stints on The Expanse, Gang Related and Nashville.

Why even call it Magnum PI at this point?

Jay Hernandez? So Thomas Magnum is part Latino?

Re: Magnum PI (reboot)

Vietnam always played a significant part in the Magnum universe. For me, that aspect is what made the show memorable and poignant; the portrayal of Vietnam vets in a respectful and positive light. The substitution of Afghanistan over Vietnam in a Magnum reboot is almost sacrilege to me.

He is charismatic for sure, but seems like an odd choice. Might as well make Higgins a young Asian woman now.

Higgins will be a woman according to Dark Horizons.

This will probably make it as far as the Rockford Files pilot.

You do realize that in the TV series, Magnum was a former Navy SEAL and Naval Intelligence agent, right?

Is there another reason why you are laughing? Or did you simply not know that?

Well, that would really put a twist into Higgy Baby being Robin Masters. :|

I don't know about Hokeyboy but I laughed because Navy Seal is the new Hollywood thing. There's probably more Navy Seal characters in HW now than in real life.
