Re: Stranger Things (Netflix) -- Season 2 Thread -- premieres 10/27/17

My wife and I enjoyed (but didn't love) Season One. We attempted to watch Season Two when it was new and quit after three episodes when we both realized we were bored to tears.

With all the positive reviews Season Three received, we decided to go back and give Season Two a second chance. Nope, can't do it.

Am I missing something? The first season kept our interest but the second one is just too much of a slog. I'd rather watch The Boys a second time.

I think you are missing something, but it might just not be for you. And that's okay. There's plenty of other TV to watch.

Same here.

If S2 didn't do it for ya, it's not likely S3 will either.
Skip it and watch The Boys on Amazon.

It's funny... b/c the reviews for The Boys said it was pretty violent and dark, I started watching it without my wife, thinking she wouldn't like it. She came in during the fifth episode and was hooked, so now she's going back and watching it from the beginning, and I find myself rewatching it with her. It's such a good show!

I think one difference between seasons 1 & 2 is that season 1 starts with a real sense of urgency. Right from the first scene you know there's a killer monster loose. A few minutes later, Will has gone missing. Then we see a girl being chased by government agents willing to kill to keep their secret. This is all in episode one. Throughout the rest of the season, people's lives are periodically put in peril on a fairly regular basis.

For season 2, for the first few episodes, there really isn't that sense of urgency or peril. There's something wrong with Will, but he isn't missing, and his life isn't in immediate peril. The portal is still open, but looks like it's being managed by the government. Eleven is in hiding, but safe, and mostly just bored and feeling cooped up. Looking back at the episode descriptions, for season 2 it's not really until the end of episode 3 when Will gets possessed by the Mind Flayer that things start to pick up. It's not until episode 5 that anyone's life is in immediate danger.

Now, I was fine with this change since I liked the characters and setting, and the show takes a bit of time to catch up with the characters and where they are a year later and the new developments, expanding the world a bit. Also, I think the pacing picked up in the back half. However, I can see how some may find the first few episodes boring.

I think Season 3 brings in a sense of urgency a lot faster, since, without spoiling much, by the end of the first episode they've created a mystery/mission for Dustin, and have shown an immediate threat to people in the Steelworks. The whole season moves a bit brisker than season 2 as well.

I agree with your review Jay.

I still like the first season better but I was okay with the introduction of the new characters and introducing new elements. I didn't hate the Chicago episode but I agree that it took away from the pacing from the previous episodes.

I didn't like the whole Dustin and Dart thing and Eleven being away from the group for much of the season but the Snow Ball dance made up for it.

I'm in the middle of the first episode of S3 and just like it was suggested in S2 very briefly, I like what they are doing with Nancy's mom so far.
