Been pretty awful to him at times as well. Not sure where they are going with that character, but it's not a surprise that she fails at everything.

Whatever happened to Kate's weight loss surgery? I can't remember. Did she decide not to go through with it? I thought the actress had it in her contract the she had to lose weight. Did they just give up on that idea?

Re: This Is Us (NBC) -- Season 2 Thread -- Premieres 9/26/17

Perhaps I'm a glass half full kind of guy, but I look at Kate's story and all I see is someone who is trying to get better. I've seen so many people in life just throw up their hands. It's "easy" to do. So I have a special appreciation for people who fail and keep trying.

I understand her struggle with weight and the myriad of psychological issues (personally, professionally, socially, etc.) that have germinated as a result. If you look at it like, "All she has to do is stop eating so much," there is undoubtedly truth in that. But there's so much more biologically and psychologically that goes into it. The Kate we're seeing now isn't the Kate we started with. She's been trying. She moved away from Kevin. She attended the "fat farm." She's in a relationship. And she's trying to pursue her dream of singing. I don't expect her to be a well-adjusted ray of sunshine, but she's basically a decent person who certainly has a healthy shield she's developed to protect herself from the pain she's experienced in life.

There's no character on the show that I dislike.

I remember reading that it was built into her contract, probably based on decisions for the story. I'm guessing they probably axed it when they got feedback on what people liked/disliked in season 1.

The original idea...as I remember it... was that Metz would follow the "weight-loss journey" of her character. When the show became an immediate hit much was made of having a large woman playing a prominent character and many viewers identified with her. Metz and the producers talked about her character losing weight but that was suddenly looked at as fat-shaming and the producers were made to look like villains for suggesting that arc for the character. They dropped that, -as well as her doing menial or demeaning jobs (suddenly we don't hear about how she supports herself).

That's a good point...how does she afford to live in NY? Has she had a job since leaving LA?

Aren't Kate, Toby, and Kevin all back to living in LA?

I didn't think Kate and Toby moved back out there. I thought they were still in NY with Randall.

This is the problem with trying to do a "real", -or "TV Real", -drama with a lot of characters on Television. Eventually there are so many balls in the air that a certain amount of "real" gets lost.

Kate is auditioning for singing jobs in LA though. Presumably, Kevin is shooting the movie in California and Kate is there with him. Toby is likely still working at whatever job he had in LA...sorry, can't remember what he does.

Geez...I got it all screwed up then. Why did Kate go back out to LA if she's no longer her bro's assistant? Or am I remember it incorrectly and she never moved out east?

My first thought was that he was a driver (cab, limo or something).

Re: This Is Us (NBC) -- Season 2 Thread -- Premieres 9/26/17

TVGuide.com caught up with Sullivan at the Los Angeles screening of the season finale to get to the bottom of one of the show's best kept secrets, only to find out it's not really a secret at all.
"He's an IT guy," Sullivan said. "There's one line about it, in like, Episode 4. So yeah. He specializes in technology and computers."

Good episode last night. I didn't think I would like the foster kid storyline, but it's good, I like how Randall and his wife are approaching the situation.

Are there actually bowling alleys that make you give them your shoes when renting bowling shoes?

That seems kind of gross...for the bowling alley workers having to handle everyone's shoes. Whenever I've gone, in recent memory, they always just give you their shoes and we would change our shoes down by the alley without giving them ours.

Don't think we knew Jack had a brother before..

Didn't care for the Kevin stuff.. and as usual the Randal stuff was outstanding

Kevin's arc seems just way too cliche'd to be a part of this show. The rest of it all seems smart and fresh (with the exception of Kate's boyfriend dancing in the diner which was so god damned cringe worthy).

It would be great if they reveal that Toby is not the father.

My thoughts exactly.

Oh, I loved that part. For me the "cringe worthy" was Kate's screaming fight with Madison... and the hugs that she tried to give her friend.

... that would be too obvious. I'm just afraid that the writer will use this as the "cliff hanger" at the end of the season.

They already gave me a scare with the minor car accident thing.

Randall and Kevin conversation outside the bathroom was the best, "There could be a lady pooping in there."

Toby dancing around the coffee shop was hilarious. Gotta love the fact he did a Flashdance shout out to boot.

Re: This Is Us (NBC) -- Season 2 Thread -- Premieres 9/26/17

This may be the first show since Lost to rely and use flashbacks so well. However, I’m not sure they went in pitching it as Lost meets any number of family dramas.

I think the camping trip would have worked better last year when Kevin dropped everything to go be with Randall during his breakdown, but I suppose it also served as a Jack storyline too.

Really hope Kevin fixed himself and doesn’t mess things up with Sophie. Too good of a thing.

I hope Kevin doesn't become a character who constantly gets good breaks and then throws them away. I know self-destructiveness is good for maintaining Drama, but it can become tiresome to watch.
