I'm pretty sure that's a mock-up from the Star Trek Las Vegas convention.

FYI he's Gregory Peck's grandson.

With the ears and hair, I could see him looking like Spock.

Adam Nimoy and Terry Farrell are married. You can't get more Trek than that. Did they meet and fall in love at a convention?

Do you think when they audition actors for Spock that they make them do the hand gesture and cut anyone who can't do it?

I would certainly hope so...

I recall the story of how DeForest Kelley would have to force his fingers into position off camera and hold them until the scene in the TOS days.

But I think the guy has the right look, and if the acting gene was passed down from Gregory, maybe we'll get something cool.

Remember, this is Spock of The Cage era. He's not going to be the same as the rest of the series, so keep that in mind.

Shatner can't do it at all. On the other hand, George Takei did it so often, Nimoy once said "I think George thinks he's a Vulcan."

I didn’t even realize Spock was supposed to be in this. Still need to give the first season a shot at some point.

It's a slow burn getting into it. I'll say upfront, the massive (and unnecessary) visual reboot makes it hard to get your mind into the right groove, but just keep watching and it picks up steam.

It kinda feels like that once the Bryan Fuller influence is gone, the show gets massively better, but maybe it's just the staff getting their feet under them.

The visual and technological updates can be frustrating, but I understand the readon behind for it.

Star Trek TOS was a product of the 1960s, and presented a vision of the 23rd century using technology and budgets available at the time. It's a very analog aesthetic, with printouts and physical timers rolling down numbers. Since we know it was a product of its time, we can overlook how incongruous it is with our current tech (I say this as I'm tapping this out the virtual keyboard of an iPad!), but if a new series would go the same route, it would look like some kind of retrofuturistic steampunk thing.

It's probably for the best that Star Trek keep moving forward in the timeline and avoid doing prequels because our current technological advancement in many ways outstrips what Trek can conceive of, and the special efects, make-up, and production values also keep improving.

And speaking of changes, I think the look of the Klingons was changed to bury Shazad Latif under a bunch of latex to conceal his identity for the twist that everyone had already figured out -- in no small part because it divulged early on that he would play a Klingon, and then changed him to a human character.

Yeah, you really can’t do a prequel series in the style of TOS and have it be taken seriously in modern times. Of course the original series is great but definitely a product of its time and wouldn’t work well. I’m ready for them to move past trying to do prequels personally. I’m more interested in post TNG/DS9/VOY era.

I just can't agree with this.

For starters, there's been some images leaked of the Enterprise crew (Pike and Number One) and they're wearing an updated version of command gold like we saw in TOS.

Second - JJ Abrams managed to update the uniforms well enough to work on the big screen. Yes, the bridge still looks like an Apple store, but it retained enough of the classic shape that it still worked.

Thirdly - TNG, DS9 and ENT all had episodes that showed something from the TOS era. They all had the opportunity to update the look yet instead they slavishly recreated the original feel. VOY's turn with the TOS movie era also stuck to that look, though it was admittedly more modern.

And the Klingons have already been re-invented a dozen times over. We have seen enough variations to incorporate both the Augment Virus and the "north and south Klingons" explanations.

The problem with Discovery that keeps me from embracing it wholeheartedly is that it feels like they're making all these changes just to make the changes, not because they're necessary to the story. There's even a bit recently released where one of the makeup designers is bragging about how the season 2 design for the Klingons is going to make people freak out. Again - it's like they're making changes just to push buttons, not do something new and interesting.

You want new and interesting? Tell us that Spock and Sarek had a falling out because
Spoiler:
the science academy was being racist and would only let in one of Sarek's "special" kids and both turned it down.

Now *that's* adding something new and interesting to the canon, and it didn't require a visual reboot.

I more just meant in terms of the instrument panels and tech stuff that trying to go with the stylings of the original series wouldn’t work. Uniforms aren’t a problem and really you could probably use something fairly similar to the originals (the Abrams versions were fine). The Abrams-verse to me feels similar to TOS but you can tell it’s different and removes from it. It would be hard to expect a new series to try and act like it’s coming before TOS and try and mimic the set designs of the original Enterprise and whatnot but it also is weird to try and act like the prequels are before TOS when their tech is obviously more advanced. Kinda similar to the Star Wars prequels.

Since Star Trek: Discovery‘s second season won’t arrive until next year, the CBS All Access series is serving up some appetizers to tide us over through the fall.

The previously announced four-part series of shorts titled Star Trek: Short Treks will debut on Thursday, Oct. 4 on the streaming service, TVLine has learned, with a new episode rolling out each month. Each short, running 10 to 15 minutes long, will focus on a single character, three of which we already know from Discovery: Mary Wiseman’s Tilly, Doug Jones’ Saru and Rainn Wilson’s Harry Mudd. Plus, Aldis Hodge (Underground) will play a new character named Craft in a fourth short.

Here are the premiere dates and plot details for the four Short Treks installments:

* “Runaway” (Thursday, Oct. 4) — “Onboard the U.S.S. Discovery, Ensign Tilly (Mary Wiseman) encounters an unexpected visitor in need of help. However, this unlikely pair may have more in common than meets the eye.”

* “Calypso” (Thursday, Nov. 8) — “After waking up in an unfamiliar sickbay, Craft (Aldis Hodge) finds himself on board a deserted ship, and his only companion and hope for survival is an A.I. computer interface.”

* “The Brightest Star” (Thursday, Dec. 6) — “Before he was the first Kelpien to join Starfleet, Saru (Doug Jones) lived a simple life on his home planet of Kaminar with his father and sister. Young Saru, full of ingenuity and a level of curiosity uncommon among his people, yearns to find out what lies beyond his village, leading him on an unexpected path.”

* “The Escape Artist” (Thursday, Jan. 3) — “Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson), back to his old tricks of stealing and double-dealing, finds himself in a precarious position aboard a hostile ship — just in time to try out his latest con.”

I'm still hoping they [eventually] release this on UHD- I hear colors in HDR alone are amazing. It's an HDR show (1080p) on Netflix in some-non US regions.

Just binged this, had a free month of CBS. After a shaky start, I think it rocked, and is the best first season of Trek since TOS. Hopefully not alone on that thinking, going to go back and read the thread now.

How’d you get a free month.

All I see is 7 day freebies.

If you're going to do CBS Access and have Prime you're better doing it that way because the PQ/AQ is much, much better. You'll actually get DD+ surround through the Prime channel.

Anything better than a mono speaker 5” b&w TV is superfluous, but thanks for the reminder to use the free trial at Prime to binge season 2 next year!
