Has to be The Wire. I've rewatched it a few times and it just gets better.
Breaking Bad is a good choice too, definitely Top 5 on my list. |

Almost any list I've seen of "Best TV Shows Ever" is topped by post-2000 shows.
For example, the top 10 imdb rated shows are: 1. Planet Earth II (2016) 9.5 2. Band of Brothers (2001) 9.5 3. Planet Earth (2006) 9.5 4. Game of Thrones (2011) 9.4 5. Breaking Bad (2008) 9.4 6. It's seriously one of the smartest television shows ever written, obscured by how equally silly it can be, which is what makes it so brilliant. I'd put Mad Men and Justified up there as well, since both shows were brilliant for their entire run, and never really stumbled. |

The Sopranos is still my favorite tv since the turn of the century (it started in 1999). Even though I still hate the ending, it still had a great run that was always water cooler talk on Monday at work. The most underrated aspect of the show was that it was so funny despite being a drama. The one liners were so memorable, "I got these Feds so far up my ass I can taste brill cream!"

I'm tossed between The Sopranos and Breaking Bad.
Honorable mention to Deadwood, but as it didn't run its course, it's not up for consideration. Mad Men, too, but it's just below The Sopranos and BB. |

Mad Men was good but I don't think it was consistent enough to be considered an all time great. It tapered off in quality the last couple seasons.
I'd say Breaking Bad and if others are counting it I'll say The Sopranos too. Most of it took place after 2000 so I think it's fair. Also I'll say season one of True Detective. Since it's seasons aren't connected I think it's fair to judge them individually and it was great tv. |
