After giving it some thought as someone who has played a fair amount of Assassin's Creed, Dragonage, and Skyrim, I think they I know how they accomplished the whole time issue. Once certain locations are reached by major characters, fast travel is available!

But you cannot fast travel when enemies are nearby!

I also hated the time issues in this episode (like so many others here and elsewhere), but if they had actually gone and really killed Jon Snow via freezing/drowning, I would have felt better about it. The show used to be surprising like that. I *almost* thought Tormund might die, and that would have sucked, but been totally appropriate. But that is how the show used to be. I never really thought Jon Snow was going to die.
Yeah, so they killed some red shirts, and Thoros of Myr. But how many people who only watch the show, and don't read up on it, could even tell you what that guy's name was? <20%, I'm sure.

Beric won't be coming back from the dead anymore without Thoros, so that was a pretty eventful one. I doubt Melisandre will be much help.

People always joke about how slow the Night King moves, but isn't he just marching around north of the Wall killing as many living things as he can to build up the army of the (un)dead before he moves south? It's not like he's actually supposed to be just inching along southward at a snail's pace...

The Night King: "Hmm, I have this awesome fucking ice spear. Who should I throw it at? There is the biggest dragon of the three, sitting completely on the ground, with a bunch of people trying to climb onto it to escape, but there is also this other, smaller dragon, flying around in the sky, farther away, and a moving target, so harder to hit. Hmm. Which should I throw my spear at? The big grounded target, or the smaller, moving target?

He'll get there when his army is ready, presumably before the show ends.

Melisandre also raised somebody from the dead. And she's still out there(in Volantis?). Just saying.

The show has "jumped the dragon" for them. it'll be over soon. He even admits he thinks that the writing is suffering. As I've always said, when a film or show is liked, people let things slide and when it's not liked as much, every little thing becomes a major issue.
Funny thing is all this bitching about time travel and location jumping..
BUT NOT ONE GODDAM WORD ABOUT WHERE THE FUCK THE DEAD GOT BIG ASS CHAINS TO PULL A FUCKIN' DRAGON OUT OF A LAKE!!!!

I read a crazy theory that the Night King is actually
We'll see if that's true, but it's a neat concept.

For example, when they are being chased, have them cross a large frozen river' instead of a lake, and into a cave for safety. Maybe even the same cave where Jon showed off his tongue skills. That would've been a nice callback and they could have set up camp, made a fire, ate, and waited. Everything else could've been the same.
Instead:
- Put them in a more elevated position that was restricted to a single, more easily defended approach
- "save" them with a more plausible ice break
- Imply more passage of time with a small amount of additional footage (them eating a little from their supplies, perhaps melting water, even making a fire, why not?)
Combine this with a more plausible reason why Jon got separated at the end (again, use topography to your advantage here), Then all we would be left with is the ridiculous BenJen coincidence and the ridiculous basis for them being their to begin with and you'd have an episode that did not quite so strongly scream, "Haha! You'll eat any crap I serve you!!" into the face of its audience.

According to the wiki article (http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Westeros) Westeros is roughly 900 miles from south to north.
