ABC orders live-action sitcom The Jetsons

ABC has ordered a live-action adaptation of the classic cartoon The Jetsons, EW has learned.

Based on the Hanna-Barbera characters, this updated multi-camera sitcom is set 100 years in the future and looks at America’s favorite future family through a modern filter.

The network has given a put pilot order — meaning it’ll likely go to series or there will be penalties attached — for the project from writer Gary Janetti, who will executive produce with Robert Zebecks, Jack Rapke, and co-executive producer Jackie Levine. Nickleby, Inc. and Compari Entertainment are attached in association with Warner Bros. Television.

The sci-fi cartoon originally debuted on ABC in 1962, was revived in 1984, and also aired in syndication.

I remember when there were talks of a live action movie a few years back.

I think a live action sitcom might work with the right people cast.

I worked at WB when the live action movie was being batted around. I think I threw the script away recently, along with the rough renditions of how it should look for Spacely Sprockets and the high school. Even some mock ups of Rosie.

Yeah, I always bring this up with friends - of all the cartoons they've turned into big screen movies (Flintstones, Scooby-Doo, Smurfs, etc.), I could never figure out why no one tackled The Jetsons - seems like a perfect pick for a live-action movie.

I don't know. A Science Fiction Multi-Cam sitcom? Sounds like this is something that's going to be done on the cheap in a sound stage with lots of green screen.
