24 reboot in development (Non-CTU story)

http://tvline.com/2017/08/08/24-rebo...ack-bauer-ctu/

Quote:
If 24‘s clock starts ticking again, it won’t echo in the halls of the infamous Counter-terrorism Unit.
Appearing at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Tuesday, Fox chairman Dana Walden said that producers of the action franchise “have a really exciting idea [for a reboot] that I thought was very compelling, but we’re at very early stages.”
Having previously announced that any new 24 would not continue the story of Corey Hawkins’ Eric Carter or any other Legacy characters, Walden said, “We’re really exploring what the future [of the series] might be,” noting it “might live in a more anthological storytelling franchise.”
Having stuck “very close to what we did in the original,” Walden said, “Our goal was to do something different that extended the life of the franchise.”

Fox entertainment boss David Madden added that the next iteration of 24 would take “the same kind of ticking clock format and apply it to something else” — most likely abandoning the CTU setting that has played a central role in every season/revival to date, and instead be set in “a new venue.”

That is a step in the right direction if you ask me.

Re: 24 reboot in development (Non-CTU story)

Yeah I agree. If you can't continue a Jack Bauer storyline, scrap CTU and everything about the show's past. Do something completely different. Legacy was a massive creative disappointment.

We'll see what they manage to come up with in the coming months. I have to assume this is in development for 2018-19.

No Jack Bauer, no sale. Period. Unless you were to somehow make President Charles Logan the protagonist in which case I'd be all over it.

Re: 24 reboot in development (Non-CTU story)

Bring back Yvonne Strahovski and have it revolve around her character after she left CTU. I'm sure they can find a way to put her in some crazy situations.

Deadline says that FOX is talking to Howard Gordon, Brian Grazer and surprisingly original 24 co-creator Joel Surnow about this reboot.

If you followed 24's history, Surnow left the show during season 7 when it was postponed 1 year because of the writer's strike. He's been sort of semi-retired for almost 10 years.

That's kind of promising that Surnow is involved.

Keep Evan Katz and Manny Coto far away from 24. After a promising Live Another Day, which they ran, they totally mailed it in with Legacy.

Re: 24 reboot in development (Non-CTU story)

Did somebody say "24"?

My idea - Introduce some new characters and storyline, and halfway through the season, reveal a twist that the timeline takes place in-between the former 24 seasons. Can have cameos from the classic characters like David Palmer, Michelle Dessler, Renee Walker, etc

Re: 24 reboot in development (Non-CTU story)

The initial reports say it's not going to have anything to do with terrorism, CTU etc.

So that's completely off the table.

They should go back to something much smaller. Season 1 was a much smaller scale storyline for the most part. It was for the first 13 episodes at least Jack trying to find his missing daughter and wife.

I think the reboot should take place in the woods and every episode should end with a character running into a cougar.

Without the terrorism angle, the only other interesting plot I can think of would be a natural disaster; like the San Andreas movie, which I really liked.

Re: 24 reboot in development (Non-CTU story)

Updated information. Apparently 2 potential Pilots are being written:

https://deadline.com/2017/08/24-rebo...ox-1202144832/

Quote:
I hear that there are actually two ideas, one that originated from (Joel)Surnow, who would write, and one that (Howard) Gordon is working on with other writers. I hear it is quite possible that Fox may put the two ideas on parallel tracks, developing both, with one of the projects possibly going to pilot before the official pilot season next year.

One thing that both ideas have in common — they will not have the signature CTU setting of all previous incarnations. “The same kind of ticking clock format and apply it to something else,” Fox Entertainment president David Madden said. “It will have the same urgency but may not be set in the CTU, it will have same style and urgency but in a different venue.”

The proposed new 24 is not genre, and it doesn’t deal with a pandemic. “I think that partly what is exciting is, we’re opening up the possibility of it being anything where that 24-hour clock is at the most critical period of a story, so I don’t want to limit them,” Walden said after the session. “It can only be an action-oriented show, maybe not. It can only be an emotional thing. The opportunity is for them to think their biggest thoughts.”

Re: 24 reboot in development (Non-CTU story)

Only way this is any good is getting rid of all the people who made the original a success. Gordon, Surnow and anyone else needs to go. Fresh blood is best way to do something fresh that doesn't suck.

On the other hand, Surnow quit 24 almost 10 years ago and I think being away that long might help him create a fresh take on it.

Re: 24 reboot in development (Non-CTU story)

the original 24 series is like nothing else in terms of addicitive must watch the next episode tv

over the last weekend, i started rewatching season 7. Before i knew it i, i was up to episode 12 !

No one show, even some of my favourites have these kind of episode to episode adreniline explosion

24's greatest ever trait is getting you invested in one baddie, giving you the payoff of seeing him/her get taken out then introducing a bigger badder baddie

e.g. season 7 Dubarku to Jumu to starkwood etc

compare that to a lot of shows which just tease out the payoff for far too long (e.g. the Following, the strain)

those shows are like having a wank and not being allowed to cum. With 24, you are allowed to cum a glorious amount of times, loud and proud in the living room all over the furniture

Re: 24 reboot in development (Non-CTU story)

I'm all for letting some creative types come up with something new. The ticking clock was always compelling, not only for the tension, but also for the info and structure it provided. If a character said something would take two hours to happen, you knew it would be in the next episode, not this one. But if it was going to take a half hour, it could happen in this episode.

If they can take that ticking clock and wrap it around something else, I'm in. I can't imagine what it could be, but that's why I'm watching, not creating.

Re: 24 reboot in development (Non-CTU story)

Anthology is the way to go especially if they aren't married to it being an action show. If they're willing to dabble into politics they can easily do a season set around some crisis at the White House and have it be more like West Wing.

It's going to be "Young Jack Bauer" and take place on the first day of Junior High. In real time!

Re: 24 reboot in development (Non-CTU story)

Here's an idea: North by Northwest in real time.

A story about a regular person who is forced into a plot which grows over the season into an international incident. The main character does not need to be a super spy or soldier.

Re: 24 reboot in development (Non-CTU story)

Season 8 episode 1

You just wished Jack went to LA with Kim, her husband and his grand daughter Terri. He did that job as a security consultant for his friend and just lived happily ever after (maybe with Renee Walker).

Imagine your a producer on a film set in LA. one of your stars have been getting some death threats, so you want to beef up security around the lot. You call in a private security company and you get Jack Bauer as a consultant, how cool would that be !
