Re: Ray Donovan (Showtime) -- Season 5 Discussion Thread -- premieres 8/6/17

My turn for clarification:

Am I forgetting previous scenes which set up the conflict between Frank Barnes and Avi, and Avi's descent?

Also, is the Smitty character someone we are learning about only through flashbacks this season, or was he previously a character?

Sorry, if the answers are obvious...I really am trying to pay attention.

I think it happened off-screen before the season started. They found the drugs and then some kind of shenanigans happened. Or at least I think - because I don't remember the season ending with any conflict and I don't remember seeing Avi until this latest episode.

I'm sure Smitty is the same deal. He was another patient also going for cancer treatment at the same time as Abby. We never saw any of the cancer stuff with Abby (other than her finding out she had cancer) with Abby - so this stuff happened between the 2 seasons.

Now it's MY turn to get some answers:

Who's the black chick and what did she take from Ray? What's going on there? As I get older, I find it harder to connect things in new seasons since I can't remember stuff from the previous season. Those recaps at the beginning of episodes don't always give enough details.

This season is really weird and disjointed and confusing.

It's like they reached a decision at the last minute to make it the final season and just through together a season and didn't have enough time to go through some storylines, so they just made stuff happen in off-screen and pushed up the timeline to skip all of it.

Re: Ray Donovan (Showtime) -- Season 5 Discussion Thread -- premieres 8/6/17

The black woman was a partner of sorts of that Tom guy, as they both worked for Sam Winslow and the studio. Tom and the black woman each got a half mil cash bag payoff to give back everything at the beginning of the season, which they obviously didn't.

The black woman seem pissed that Tom held out and is apparently getting another payday. What she took from Ray was what Sam Winslow really wanted - The evidence of cover up from the automobile accident that killed Winslow's daughter. But, how the black woman Vicky just conveniently died immediately after the robbery was just beyond contrived.

Man, did Terry do an assisted suicide on Abby?

Tonight's episode was good in it's own right, but from what we've already been shown/told this season - it felt like filler.

The episode basically just gave us more specific details of what we already know. Everything could have been achieved with small flashbacks similar to what they've been doing on previous episodes.

I didn't realize that Jay Thomas had shot stuff for this season. He was definitely looking on the thin side there.

Holy shit this weeks episode was balls out. It had a little bit of everything that makes Ray great. And always love seeing him carrying the baseball bat.

Sad to see

New York should be a good change of scenery.

I’m still into this show, however since it started so late with Fall shows airing simultaneously I’ve fallen several episodes behind. It’s just so hard to make time for everything.

Re: Ray Donovan (Showtime) -- Season 5 Discussion Thread -- premieres 8/6/17

I heard about the plans for season 6 before season 5 started. Basically, Liev Schreiber doesn't want to be away from his kids so he made them move the show to New York. I had thought the plan was to set the show in Boston but film in NY, but I guess it'll be set in NY now.

Will Ray's brothers and Mickey go to New York too? Seems hard to explain. Sounds like Ray's daughter be a big part of the show.

It took me this long to figure out that Ray's therapist was played by C. Thomas Howell. Quite a long way from Soul Man.

I guess Doug Landry is the show's version of Harvey Weinstein... using his power to bang the hot young starlets. Kinda coincidental that the actor played the President on House of Cards who lost his job to Frank Underwood - played by another predator Kevin Spacey.

Re: Ray Donovan (Showtime) -- Season 5 Discussion Thread -- premieres 8/6/17

I'm a couple episodes behind - watched ep. 10 last night (Bob the Builder). I'm enjoying the season. The non-linear departure shook things up a bit and yes, introduced some redundancy and perhaps drew some stuff out that wasn't necessary.

At the core though, Ray, Bunch and Terry have been the focal point and Ray's daughter gets something a little more meaningful to work with this season. The son has been MIA, but we haven't been invested in him all that much up until this season so I'm not missing him.

Glad to hear of the renewal and change of scenery - I think it'll do the show some good to keep things fresh.
