Episode #21 (season 3, episode 1): "Seeds of Expansion"

Debut date: SUNDAY, JULY 23 (10:00-10:30 p.m. ET/PT)

Looking to score high-profile clients to pay off his debts to Ricky (John David Washington) and Vernon (Donovan Carter), Spencer (Dwayne Johnson) hits a roadblock with Mr. Anderson (Richard Schiff), who wants to focus on the Las Vegas market by partnering with casino magnate Wayne Hastings, Jr. (Steve Guttenberg). Ricky ponders fatherhood; Vernon (Donovan Carter) and Reggie (London Brown) eye an edgy endorsement; Larry (Dulé Hill) makes Charles (Omar Benson Miller) the face of bad news at a team press conference.

Written by Rob Weiss; directed by Julian Farino.

10 episode 3rd season

Production moved from Miami to Los Angeles for this new season due to Florida's entertainment tax issues. I'm sure the show is still set in Miami though.

Well, I don't have that much to say about this episode. Ballers is certainly watchable and isn't a huge time commitment, but it isn't exactly a discussion friendly show. You watch an episode and likely forget about it.

Let's see. Spencer is worried about his ability to have kids post-hip replacement surgery. Okay.

Charles is a shitty Assistant GM and why would any team hire him for that job?

Ricky is expecting a baby with one of his groupies.

I did find it amusing they bring up the Las Vegas NFL situation and now Spencer wants to help bring a team there. I wonder how close this was filmed to the Raiders announcing their move there. Nice that they gave Steve Guttenberg some work. They could have easily hired a much bigger name.

and Jesus, Vernon is supposed to be an NFL player? He looks horrendously out of shape. Man boobs and huge gut.

and did they not do any NBA research? Dwyane Wade doesn't play for the Heat anymore and hasn't for 2 years.

With so much great television out there I don't know why someone would waste their time with something that is just "watchable and not too much of a time commitment".

I watch mainly because it's an HBO show and I like Dwayne Johnson. Plus I like the idea of a sports satire. However, I do admit that it's not really that funny and there are rarely any compelling plots. Hence, I do understand why the folks here rarely have anything to say about it. The 30 minutes do go by fast though.

For me, there's not much else on on Sundays when this airs, and like DJariya said I like Dwayne Johnson and Rob Corddry. There's always a few good scenes that keep me entertained, but I wouldn't miss it if it were gone. I thought it would be like Entourage: NFL, and to some extent that's true, but it falls short.

I mainly watch it for The Rock, Corddry, and the plethora of good looking women that usually show up. It's really not that compelling of a show.

Yeah it's kind of a sports version of Entourage. Sadly.

I also watch for the very mild 30 minute entertainment. It's not terrible - it's just forgettable.

Spencer's concern if he's shooting blanks is a story line that I'm sick of. I hope they get away from it quickly.

Like the first 2 seasons, Charles' story line is so uninteresting. It really feels like they don't know what to do with him, but feel they need a character who's a former-player turned front-office guy... but didn't think far enough ahead of how they could make it interesting.

Bringing a team to LV just feels like they're recycling the Entourage story line of Ari trying to bring a team to LA.

So I guess promoting a marijuana clothing brand is gonna bite Vernon in the ass with the NFL... especially giving a kid a shirt? And of course Reggie is taking control and doesn't want to run anything by Spencer. Feels like they're just repeating issues with Reggie.

I noticed the same thing. I know defensive tackles aren't the most fit athletes in the world, but Vernon looks like he's all fat and little muscle.

Entourage was Citizen Kane compared to this... but as others have mentioned, it's an easy watch with sports, hot chicks and The Rock.

You need a dose of the fluff sometimes. It can't just be the heavies like Thrones and Twin Peaks.

And when I say fluff, I don't mean comedies. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is a comedy, but it's brilliant and lightning fast. It requires as much attention as the heavy stuff.

It's okay to just enjoy something. You don't have to love everything you watch. (Even though there's so much stuff now, you probably could watch nothing but stuff you love.)

Damn, Ricky is such a douche.

Plus, it looks like he's developed a gambling addiction after last week's episode.

It looks like they're linking the Raiders move to Las Vegas into this season.

I liked Spencer's meeting with Tim Brown. But what does he have to do with the Raiders other than being a former player?

"You blow me off to work out your biceps" This season must have been shot close to the time of the move happening.

Surprised no one mentioned last week's episode with Serinda Swan. That was a great shot of her ass in the bedroom scene with The Rock.

The show is so paint-by-numbers and been-there-done-that, which makes it not interesting enough for a discussion - even with a great ass-shot.

I don't think I can make myself watch this any more. There's no point listing all the reasons why. Mostly I just find none of the storylines interesting so my mind wanders, and then I notice it ended. It's a series of contrived cameos and stilted dialogue that I think is meant to be hip and clever. I'm done.

Oh, and the actual football content of the show is completely laughable. Tonight I learned watching the Dolphins practice that before Ryan Tannehill went down with an injury he had taught himself to throw with both arms.

I was thinking the same thing on Sunday.

Yea, I'm sleep-watching this show... which makes sense since it seems like they're sleepwalking when they're making it.

I don't think I've ever watched a show that rode the fence like this before. Don't hate it, but don't like it either. I acknowledge it's existence... that's it.

I think I'll bail as well.

Renewed for a 4th season today

If you're wondering why?

http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/dai...gs-aug-6-2017/

It has the 3rd highest linear ratings on HBO on Sunday. It's the most watched comedy (if you can call it that) on HBO currently. Having Johnson starring in it certainly helps.

It's fluff entertainment. I like it for what it is. It's a light and breezy 30 minutes.

It would be better if they cut a few of the story lines. The guy working for the Dolphins has become meaningless, sadly. No connection left with the main cast.

I probably wouldn't watch if it were an hour but it's well put together for a quick 20-30 min.

DJariya 08-08-17 01:44 PM

Re: Ballers (HBO) -- S: Dwayne Johnson -- Season 3 Thread -- Premieres 7/23/17

If Ballers was 1 hour and aired in the Fall, no one would watch it.

It's lucky that HBO schedules it as a 1/2 hour summer show.

I'm sure Johnson has a great time doing this. This probably takes no more than 1 1/2 months of his time in between making movies.

I just want Charles and Mr. Siefert the fuck off the show. Don't care how, hell, kill them off like the dude in the first episode.

Also the monster truck driving was idiotic.

It's as if the show was written by children...what they imagine being a grown up businessmen or NFL player is like. Except it is full of cursing, sex references, and drug use.

 at Charles even being considered for an interview as the Chargers GM. Now that is far fetched. The guy was barely selling cars a year ago.

Very contrived to create tension between him and his wife over the Ricky thing.

 The actress who plays his wife has a smoking body. She's looked great in the lingerie she's been in.

I kind of like Steve Guttenberg playing the douchey casino guy who's being pitched the stadium. "Wayneville" is such a douchey name.

These episodes just end so abruptly. Last night's with Spencer accepting they are selling the company and then the episode ending was kinda....ok?

Yeah, the Ricky/wife misunderstanding type shit was old when Three's Company did it.
