Cowboy Bebop (Netflix) - Live-Action Series - premieres 11/19/21

You like bounty hunters? You like space? Take a seat, friend, because I’ve got some good news for you. A live action adaptation of Sunrise’s Cowboy Bebop anime is in the works. Prepare yourself.

According to Deadline, Marty Adelstein’s Tomorrow studios is partnering with Midnight radio to produce Cowboy Bebop for television with the blessing of Sunrise, the studio responsible for the original series. In a public statement, Adelstein expressed his excitement at developing the adaptation for American audiences.

“The animated version has long resonated with audiences worldwide,” Adelstein said. “With the continued, ever growing, popularity of anime, we believe a live action version will have an incredible impact today.”

We already had this with Firefly, which was released at just the right time and always struck me as having elements from Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Outlaw Star, and Noir.

I guess I'm in to try this out, but I've had my heart broken once before

The casting will really make or break this for me. Especially for Spike and Faye.

I'd take Idris Elba and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Spike oozed cool in the show, I don't associate Andrew Garfield or Joseph Gordon-Levitt with that trait. In fact, I can't think of many that do anymore.

Yeah, it was too expensive. Plus, he's too old now. Same people that are doing the new Snowpiercer series. I like how in both cases they are partnering with the original production people. Like, how amazing would it be if they got Yoko Kanno to do the show's soundtrack?

I think casting will be pretty easy for everyone except Spike. Sadly, I think one of the reasons they optioned it was because the characters are not all Japanese. The can do a mixed race cast without any real backlash since the characters are a big blend of ethnicity. The can cash-in on a Anime property and not have to worry about upsetting the purists.

Spike is Caucasian, but grew up on a mainly Chinese part of Mars.
Jet is black, but grew up on a mainly French moon. Faye is from Singapore so she's Asian. Ed can be... well... anything really.

Idris Elba is way too damn old for Spike. They're going to go for someone in their early 20's (or at least who looks like it). I love Elba but no way.

I thought he meant Elba to play Jet, not Spike. For Spike, you need someone young, long, and lean.

Since its on Spike I'm assuming this will have a budget of $15 dollars.

I'm perfectly OK with this. I adore the original series. And I've got no problem seeing what happens with this.

Is this going to air on FOX? If so I'll wait for the Complete Series DVD set in 2019.

Might as well just CG Ed because there's no human who could possibly match her.

Takeshi Kaneshiro 15 years ago was perfect for that role.

I think Millie Bobby Brown could be a good Ed.

‘Cowboy Bebop’: John Cho, Mustafa Shakir Among Four Cast in Netflix Live-Action Series
By JOE OTTERSON @JoeOtterson

The “Cowboy Bebop” live-action series at Netflix has found the lion’s share of its main cast, Variety has learned.

John Cho, Mustafa Shakir, Daniella Pineda, and Alex Hassell have all been cast in lead roles in the series, which is based on the anime series of the same name.

Cho will star as Spike Spiegel, described as an impossibly cool bounty hunter with a deadly smile, a wry wit, and style to spare. He travels the solar system with his ex-cop partner, Jet, pursuing the future’s most dangerous bounties with a combination of charm, charisma — and deadly Jeet Kune Do. Cho is known for his roles in the rebooted “Star Trek” film franchise as well as the “Harold and Kumar” films. He will also appear in an upcoming episode of the “Twilight Zone” reboot at CBS All Access. He is repped by UTA, 3 Arts Entertainment, and Morris Yorn.

Shakir will play Jet Black, one of the few honest cops in the solar system before an ultimate betrayal robbed him of all that he loved, forcing him into a vagabond life of hunting bounties to put food on the table. Jet is an inveterate jazz enthusiast and Captain of the Bebop. Shakir recently starred in Season 2 of the Marvel-Netflix series “Luke Cage” as well as the HBO series “The Deuce.” He is repped by Gersh, Robyn Bluestone Management, and Schreck Rose.

Pineda will play Faye Valentine, described as a bold, brash and unpredictable bounty hunter. Suffering from amnesia after years of being cryogenically frozen, Faye does whatever it takes to survive. Whether she’s lying, stealing, or just being a thorn in Spike and Jet’s side. Pineda’s previous credits include “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” “The Detour,” and “Inside Amy Schumer.” She is repped by UTA, Kirsten Ames Management, and Schreck Rose.

Hassell will play Vicious. Described as a man who thoroughly enjoys a good kill, Vicious is the Syndicate’s most notorious hitman. He’s also Spike Spiegel’s ex-partner and arch-enemy. Hassell will appear in the upcoming Amazon series “The Boys.” His previous credits include “The Bisexual” and “Genius” Season 2. He is repped by Gersh, United Agents in the U.K., and Magnolia Entertainment.

Radical Ed will also appear in the series, but the casting process for that character is ongoing.

Netflix picked up “Cowboy Bebop” for 10 episodes back in November. The series is described as the jazz-inspired, genre-bending story of Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine and Radical Ed, a rag-tag crew of bounty hunters on the run from their pasts as they hunt down the solar system’s most dangerous criminals. They’ll even save the world for the right price.

Shinichiro Watanabe, director of the original anime, will serve as a consultant on the project. Christopher Yost, who previously penned “Thor: The Dark World” and “Thor: Ragnarok”, will write the first episode and executive produce. Andre Nemec, Josh Appelbaum, Jeff Pinkner, and Scott Rosenberg of Midnight Radio will serve as executive producers. Yasuo Miyakawa, Masayuki Ozaki, and Shin Sasaki of Sunrise Inc.– the studio behind the original series–will also executive produce along with Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements of Tomorrow Studios, Tetsu Fujimura, and Matthew Weinberg. The series is a co-production between Netflix and Tomorrow Studios, with Netflix handling physical production.

The casting isn't exactly inspiring, to say the least. I wasn't familiar with the actress but from what I've seen, she ain't no Faye Valentine by a longshot. But maybe their take will impress me.

It's outside the box casting, but I'm actually really down for Cho and Shakir. Don't know enough about the other two.
