re: Ozark (Netflix) S: Bateman, Linney -- Season 1 Thread -- premieres 7/21/17

Finished this tonight. It was really good.

It definitely reminds me of Breaking Bad - the struggle between being good and bad, getting in tough situations and trying to stay alive while avoiding the law, and making decisions that have consequences on not just yourself but others as well.

One thing I didn't quite get:

Spoiler:
Ruth's sudden concern for Marty's well-being. Marty treated her well all along and she still wanted to kill him - but then all of a sudden she no longer wants him dead.

Looking forward to S2.

I think she felt like she owed him, and began to appreciate him. The most obvious moment is when he gives her the strip club to manage. She was torn between what she wanted to do, and what her father was telling her to do.

Yes, but it still seems like it was too quick a turn.

Another thing:

Spoiler:
Did Marty notice the a big chunk of wall was broken and portion of the money was gone? I don't remember seeing/hearing any reference to it

Don't you just love it when ur watching a series and are so into it that you don't even notice your watching the last episode. And you don't want it to end...

I liked it a lot. Can't wait for more.

Finished it last night. Quite enjoyable. Cool to see Jason Bateman in a serious role - he played it really well.

Am I the only one who sees the Arrested Development parallels?

I really appreciated how the plot moved forward with direct, open honesty.

Okay, can't read the thread since I'm not through the series yet. However I have to say that the daughter looks exactly like Bran from Got. I can't get it out of my head whenever I see her.

Damn, Jacob's wife was ruthless at the end there.

He gave her the strip club very early on, so that can't be the pivotal moment. She was trying to kill him long after that.

I am wondering if she is almost seeing him as a father figure, and that isn't changed her mind. Sure, her father and Marty are both criminals, but at least Marty isn't in prison.

I think she saw the writing on the wall, that she was going to have to choose between Marty and her family, and she chose Marty. It seemed like Marty liked her, and (at least appeared to) respect and trust her, by giving her the strip club. I guess she saw a brighter future with Marty - and perhaps the possibility to learn a lot more advanced criminal trade from him - than her own family. At the very least, Marty is reasonable and thinks things through, unlike her family, who seemed to be of the "get tweeked and rob houses" level of crime.

It's not unreasonable: Al Capone was pretty much just a street enforcer until he saw how the money was really made.

I don't think there was a single moment.

She's opportunistic. And trying to keep rational control of situations. A lot like Marty.

I got the feeling that her father has a lot of control over her. And she had a hard time going against his insistence that she kill Marty.

And I do think that Marty's support got into her head. And the most apparent moment of that, is when he gives her the strip club.

re: Ozark (Netflix) S: Bateman, Linney -- Season 1 Thread -- premieres 7/21/17

I think it was the incident at the bus station. She saw love between a mother and daughter and then she compared that to what happened with her father right after that. Marty was more of a father figure to her than her real father had ever been and she didn't want to lose that.

Just finished it last night and really liked it. Some brutal scenes though! Really hope there's a season two.

Good show. Much better than the grouchy critics gave it credit for.

Am I the only one who initially skipped the flashback episode? I just wanted to get on with the main story.

That was actually my favorite episode, but I'm a backstory kind of guy.

The flashback episode was good for the FBI guy. Built on him quite a bit.
