Re: Twin Peaks (S1E03/E04) -- "The Return - Parts 3 & 4" -- 5/28/17

Some thoughts:

While BOB certainly has a part to play in the influence and creation of doppelgangers, I don't believe BOB is inside Doppel-Cooper. I think BOB only possesses normal humans. The doppelgangers are wicked enough on their own. It's more likely that BOB is inside Matthew Lillard's character. Lillard's arc and performance is really reminding me of the Leland Palmer scenario. Though what BOB might be doing in North Dakota is a mystery.

I'm pretty sure Doppel-Cooper hired those hitmen. He knew that, if his plan succeeded, Real Coop would replace Dougie so he had a couple guys ready to take him out.

I thought for a moment that the taste of coffee was about to start bringing back Real Coop's memories! Maybe it would have if it hadn't been so hot. Now, in his simplistic state, he's probably like "coffee=pain", so the odds of him trying some more are tragically slim.

I kind of like that Twin Peaks isn't the main focus so far (geographically). I mean, not much time has really passed in the first four episodes as far as I can tell. Having said that, I can still see where many fans may feel uneasy about the show so far because it's a very different show than the original in a lot of ways. I personally like that it's not just rehashing the original series. It's Lynch and Frost doing their thing, with no network like ABC meddling with the show (which I blame for the original show taking a downturn. Didn't the network pressure the show to reveal who killed Laura Palmer sooner than intended?).

The thought crossed my mind for a second as well, but then I was like "...Nah."

I think it helped. Prior to that scene, everything Cooper said was him repeating what others had said to him.
Jade give two rides.
Call for help.
Dougie Jones.
Helllllloooooooooooo!!
Mr. Jackpots.
Lancelot Court. Red door.
Home.
Cab.
In my life.

Then Naomi Watts brings him coffee and says, "here's your coffee."
He says "coffee" with some emotion not yet seen in his previous words. He drinks it, burning his mouth, spits it out. The he says, "HI!!!!"
No one had said that to him prior.

I don't think he'll 100% snap out of it right away, but I think the coffee was a major trigger.

I think there's a bunch of folks in this world that are either doppelgängers or had been in the black lodge at some point, too. When Mr. C (bad cooper) kills the wife of Matthew Lillard's character, he says something about how she has done well fitting in...

I think Tammy (the young FBI agent) is one of them, too. Possibly also Wally Brando.

Ah, I'd forgotten about the "HI!!!". I'm sure there's a lot more I'll catch on a second viewing.

I just hope we get the old Coop back soon enough that we can enjoy him for a while before it's all over.

Yeah, I think that's been my annoyance in these last four hours. I want old Cooper back to enjoy that sort of old feel to it.

Re: Twin Peaks (S1E03/E04) -- "The Return - Parts 3 & 4" -- 5/28/17

First of all, with Twin Peaks, Better Call Saul and Fargo all on at the same time I'm really about to have an artgasm. Jesus, TV is good these days.

I think the old Coop was basically born back into the real world which is why he's so child-like. He has to relearn everything.

Backwards is a huge theme of TP so I think the junkie was saying 911 backwards.

The giant plug that Coop goes into first said 15 then later 3. His Great Northern Lodge passkey is 315.

When the Coops were vomiting it looked to me like there was some creamed corn in the mix.

I liked how Albert and Gordon picked up on essentially Bob pretending to be Dale.

That stuff at the beginning of e03 was mind blowing.

I am not at all bothered with the digital filmmaking. This is going to be a hell of a ride this summer.

Why would Albert know where Audrey Horne drinks?

It's more likely that it's a previously unseen (but oft mentioned) FBI employee.

Re: Twin Peaks (S1E03/E04) -- "The Return - Parts 3 & 4" -- 5/28/17

"Holy jumpin George."

Most of 3 & 4 take such a drastic shift in tone from 1 & 2 that I had a difficult time with the goofiness of Mr. Jackpots and the Lucy/Andy/Wally scenes.

Part 3 started strong with that insane trip to a place we've never seen before. Dark mysterious underworld or lighthouse in the distant realms of the Black Lodge. Fascinated with every minute.

"Dougie" in the Red Room going up in smoke with a bewildered one-armed man and Coop spit out of the socket was crazy good fun. Loved all the FWWM references.

Coop playing the slots and yelling "HELLLLLLOooooooo!" every time cracks me up but these scenes of him re-learning things is a bit of a slog and really hope he's back to normal soon.

The worst part by a country mile is that stupid as f*ck Wally Brando.
4 minutes that kept going and going. I was muttering "make it end...make it end."
It felt like this thing I started out loving was dying right before my eyes in slow motion and it's Michael Cera's fault.
I never thought we'd see this kind of season 2 bullshit in the new series.

Fortunately the show made a solid attempt to recover with Albert and Gordon.
Love their exchanges.

Gordon:"Albert, cossacks are in Russia."
Albert: "CAR SICK!"

Cop: "He was throwing up some kind of poison."
Albert: "He must have eaten locally."

Cop: "This is what we found in his trunk. Cocaine...Machine gun....Dog leg."
Albert: "No cheese and crackers?"

I recognized Albert's line "the absurd mystery of the strange forces of existence" as the description Lynch would often give to his long aborted project "Ronnie Rocket." Sad that never got made.

A bit of a roller-coaster ride. Made me a little whoozy but I'm still buckled in and haven't puked up any creamed corn.

One other thing.
Since we got the numb arm and ring from FWWM I keep hoping for some followup to Annie and her message to Laura:
"The good Dale is in the lodge and he can't leave. Write it in your diary."
I thought for sure this would play a part in Coop's return.

I think it's probably Diane, but Audrey did show interest in becoming an FBI agent.

When Cooper exits the light socket he's no longer wearing his lapel pin which he had on up to that point. Maybe it got left behind with his shoes. Anyway, in the B&W opening with the giant he's not wearing the pin either. I wonder if that scene is actually from the future when Cooper has recovered and is communicating with the giant from the real world. He even flickers out like it's some remote communication.

Was very cool seeing the old electric Lynch/Frost Productions logo at the end of part 3.

The Black Lodge does have one hell of a retirement plan.

EW posted an interview with Lynch. He talks a bit about the episodes. He doesn't give anything away, but I find his thinking process interesting.

Re: Twin Peaks (S1E03/E04) -- "The Return - Parts 3 & 4" -- 5/28/17

I enjoyed the amount of humour in these two episodes compared to the first two. Not that I prefer goofy over dark and unsettling, but that I want the show to have a mix like the original series.

I agree with rocket1312's observation about how emotionally distant everything has been so far... except for the scene at the very end with Cooper and the Dougie's son. That was very endearing. I can't believe I would ever say "I wish Twin Peaks would do a story-line where Cooper teams up with a cute little kid", but I want to see the relationship between these two characters explored more in the next episode.

I liked Mr. C trying to mimic how the original Cooper's thumbs up and speech... and how he failed miserably.

I wonder how they did the shot of Maj. Briggs since the actor died years ago. I'm guessing archive footage they managed to digitally cut his face out of. Was "Blue Rose" ever mentioned in the original series.

I was surprised to see Phoebe Augustine (the actress who played Ronette Pulaski) in the end credits as "American Girl". Was that supposed to be the woman Cooper meets in the first scene? Is she not coming back as Ronette? Was that supposed to be Ronette?

Still liking this so far. The amount of questions raised by each episode is hilarious. Like WTF is Dr. Jacobi up to? Is he running a business that produces ceremonial shovels for ground breakings?

So... for those that didn't notice...

When Gordon, Albert, and Tammy meet Mr. C (evil Dale? Booper? Dooper?), his first sentence is

"It's very very good to see you again, old friend."

Except, that's not what he says. He says:

"It's yrev very good to see you again, old friend."
