American animated sci-fi series for adults

When was the last time we saw an animated sci-fi/fantasy series like HBO's Spawn or Aeon Flux on American TV? Sure, all these live-action series are great, but why not throw few animated series in the mix? Yes, there's Guardians of the Galaxy and a few others, but they're not exactly targeted at adults.

The best animated sci-fi series are anime, and have been for a very long time. With HBO working on 4 GoT spinoffs, why not do an animated one? An animated Dark Tower series could have been great. So much can be done in animation that can't be done with live actors.

And please, can we keep the CG to a minimum?

Any ideas for an animated Sci-Fi/Fantasy series?

I think animation is probably the logical outcome of space sci-fi on television, only because expensive, live-action sci-fi keeps flopping.

But please, no Flash animation.

Computer graphics, or CGI.

Green Lantern was a pretty good animated space series (all CG), although it was also targeted at kids. Roughnecks- also on the young side.

I was thinking of Rick and Morty, but that's more a satire than anything.

Anime has tons of space-operas. Would be nice to see an American one. Animated Pacific Rim series?

I just have a sense that anything animated on American TV would end up being targeted at kids, unless it's on a premium channel or Netflix. Even Netflix's animated shows are all targeted at kids (unless they're satires like Bojack Horseman). Maybe their upcoming Witcher series will be animated? Nah, too much to ask...

Rick and Morty. And Futurama. Both will be staples for the rest of my life.

I have to rewatch Spawn sometime. I remember loving it when it first aired. But I barely remember it. I think it's on Netflix or Amazon Prime.

Why don't they do more animated shows? I don't think it's complicated. People are less likely to watch them.

I don't understand what you mean by keeping the CGI to a minimum in an animated series. Cell animation is a process of the past. The only people who will be doing cell animation in the future will be able to do it because they have a government grant for the arts.

CGI can look like whatever the artist wants. Those paper cut-outs on South Park have been computer generated since they began.

I know that, but what I meant is the 3D look of CG animation. Most 2D animation is done on computer and even the hand-drawn stuff has a lot of filled in frames.

I miss the days of hand drawn animation, but I know those days are much long gone.

I did like Green Lantern. Too bad that series was short lived.

I understand now. It would be nice if 3D animation always looked as good as Rocket in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, wouldn't it? A furry raccoon who can act, and who can express multiple emotions at one time.

When TV series have 200mil budget per episode that just might happen.

To be fair, if the episodes are only 30 minutes long, they'd only need about a quarter of the budget of the feature film. So $50 mill per episode, tops.
