Getting along with office colleagues can be rough, but working with your mom? That's a whole different story, and it's the headline for Katie Wendelson (Briga Heelan), a smart, ambitious news producer at national cable news show "The Breakdown." After 30 years of being a stay-at-home mom, Carol (Andrea Martin) decides that it's never too late to follow your dreams and lands an internship at her daughter's news show. This is Katie's worst nightmare, until she comes to realize that with her biggest cheerleader at her side, she and her mom both might just make it after all. Sitting in the co-anchor chair at "The Breakdown" is Chuck Pierce (John Michael Higgins), the blowhard, difficult-to-please news desk veteran. Chuck intimidates everyone on staff except for Carol, who uses her polished mom skills to deal with him. Alongside him is Portia (Nicole Richie), the young, very hip co-host who brings a different perspective to old-fashioned journalism. Leading the news team is Greg (Adam Campbell), the dashing young executive producer. Katie's closest friend at the office is Justin (Horatio Sanz), the laid back video editor who has seen it all and is always more than happy to dole out his zen-like advice. Rounding out the newsroom is Beth (Tracey Wigfield), the creepy resident meteorologist who is far from your stereotypical weather girl.

Nicole Richie is an actress?
I like Briga and that's about all. Don't care for everyone else that I know.

This was decent. I'll check it out again; see if it has any legs.
Andrea Martin might get on my nerves over time.
I've never heard of "Briga" before this.
I also didn't know that was Nicole Richie, she fit the role fine.

I didn't like this. It wasn't terrible, but I probably won't watch any more episodes. I was surprised that Nicole Richie was actually pretty good.

Not impressed
Can't stand the mom
and Briga needs to "get her tits out for the lads", maybe not literally, but wear sexier clothing on the show

I thought it was decent. I liked Briga on Love and that short lived TBS show Ground Floor. The overbearing mom angle needs to be toned down a bit, but it won't happen on a sitcom. I'll keeping watching to see if it gets better.

Briga was really good on Ground Floor. I like the relationship with the mother, though they need to tone it down. Other than the Bill O'Reilly like anchor, everyone else is dull.

I feel the show has been getting better with each episode so I am happy it is coming back. As folks on deadline put it, hopefully this means Trial & Error will also be renewed.

The show is fine, I guess... but it seems like the entire premise (except for the mother) was ripped-off from a much better Australian show: The Wrong Girl. See if this sounds familiar: a woman in her late 20s\early 30s works as a producer on a morning TV show, which is hosted by a complete doofus (male) and a self-absorbed shrew (female). If you take the "mom" character out of Great News and replace her with "the ex-boyfriend she's still not really over" then it's almost the same exact TV show. Hell, if you ask me, Briga Heelan even looks like Christie Whelan-Browne, the main character's rival in The Wrong Girl!

US shows being based on the premise of shows from elsewhere has been going on since at least 1970.

I watched the last few episodes this morning and I agree the show is getting better. I like some of the dark comedy moments they have thrown in like the news reporter who turned out to be an arsonist.

THERE IS A MAJOR SHAKE-UP AT THE BREAKDOWN IN THE SEASON TWO PREMIERE - TINA FEY GUEST STARS - "The Breakdown" gets a new boss, Diana St. Tropez (guest star Tina Fey), a tough business lady with big plans to bring their outdated news program into the 21st century. Katie (Briga Heelan) is thrilled since this is exactly the kind of strong, professional female role model she hoped for, but Carol (Andrea Martin) is immediately wary of this new influence in Katie's life. Meanwhile, Chuck (John Michael Higgins) has trouble adapting to Diana's idea for a new panel segment of screaming pundits. Nicole Richie, Adam Campbell and Horatio Sanz also star. TV-PG L
