THE FLASH

"Duet" - (8:00:00-9:01:00 p.m. ET) (Content Rating TBD) (HDTV)

DARREN CRISS ("GLEE") GUEST STARS AS THE MUSIC MEISTER IN THE FLASH AND SUPERGIRL MUSICAL CROSSOVER - Barry (Grant Gustin) and team are surprised when Mon-El (guest star Chris Wood) and Hank Henshaw (guest star David Harewood) arrive on their Earth carrying a comatose Supergirl (guest star Melissa Benoist) who was whammied by the Music Meister (guest star Darren Criss). Unable to wake her up, they turn to Team Flash to save her. However, the Music Meister surprises The Flash and puts him in a similar coma, one that Team Flash can't cure. Kara and Barry wake up without their powers in an alternate reality where life is like a musical and the only way to escape is by following the script, complete with singing and dancing, to the end. Dermott Downs directed the episode with story by Greg Berlanti & Andrew Kreisberg and teleplay by Aaron Helbing & Todd Helbing (#317). Original airdate 3/21/2017.

Episode 17 of 23

This will be the Supergirl crossover/musical episode that's been reported for months now.

FYI, the Music Meister guest starred on last night's Supergirl for those who don't watch it.

People aren't missing much if they didn't catch the Supergirl episode last night that led into this musical crossover. The Music Meister shows up at the DEO in the last minute of the episode, breaking free and stealing Cisco's interdimensional gateway. He jumps into the gateway after hypnotizing Supergirl.

Why doesn't Bary just tell Kara to come back in May and help him kick Savatar's ass?

I am going to watch this - EW was saying it is like a mini 'glee' reunion.

My exact thoughts. Fuck, bring Superman, Martian Manhunter & Mon-El. All of them can be of some help.

I liked it. It was a strange crossover, but it was enjoyable. The songs were good and I liked hearing Gustin and Benoist sing. It also had some humor.

I  at Joe and Stein being "Dads" in the alternate world.

Couldnt help but compare it to Buffy Once more with feeling, and when compared it was not as good.

I would have preferred them be in costume during the song and dance numbers. What made Buffy great was the songs were related to the current story lines and pushed it forward.

Taking the characters out of their natural environment/story line brought it down for me.

But the super friends number was great.

If that's Melissa's real voice I'm impressed. Grant needs more singing lessons.

Awkward episode. I applaud the attempt.

I was pretty impressed with John Barrowman's voice as well. Wasn't aware of his singing and dancing background.

But overall this episode was pretty bad. The plot made no sense, and for many of us, there is a reason we never saw Grant and Melissa on Glee. Great musicals are fun, bad musicals are torture.

It sure didn't sound like it was actually Grant, especially at the end when he was singing to Iris. Sounded like someone else and the words weren't even matching his lip movements. I mostly tuned out during this episode though by letting it play in the background while I surfed the web.

Gustin can't really sing, but it doesn't matter. I actually thought it was a fun diversion from the regular plot.

So does Music Meister come from the 5th Dimension too? At least this potrayal of him sure seemed that way.

This was the first time anyone from Earth 1 saw J'onn. You'd think they'd be more freaked out.

Shouldn't Mon-El have the same powers as Supergirl? So what does Mon-El do again?

Probably him, but certainly an off camera recording that was out of sync with the scene. The scene with Iris was far worse that the duet, but both were affected at some level.

If they're going to dub in Grant's singing, why didn't they dub in somebody who was a good singer?

Re: The Flash (S3E17) -- "Duet" -- Supergirl crossover -- 3/21/17

I'm kind of torn on this. On the one hand I thought it was kind of fun but it was nowhere near as good as the Supernatural musical or even Changing Channels. I also thought the Music Meister was completely wasted and should have been more involved in the plot. I also hated the final resolution, telling them to follow the script only for them to be saved by the power of love. I also would have preferred them be in costume.

I thought Melissa looked great. It's amazing how much more likeable she is when she's not on her own show now. She also looked great as a 40's dame. Seeing J'onn suit up was cool.

Kind of rolled my eyes at Joe and Stein being a gay couple and being dual Dad's to Iris. If Berlanti wasn't so concerned about shoving politics down our throats this season I would of thought it was cute. As it stands now though it just felt like more political garbage.

None of the songs were really catchy either. I liked Super best friends but being fifty percent covers was a downer.

So yeah I'm torn. I thought it was OK but it seems like it could have been so much better.

I thought the young guy from Supergirl who played the piano had a great voice.

Yea. His background is from Broadway.

What? You mean being a musical wasn't gay enough for you?

I was expecting a little more than I actually got, -a little too much story taken seriously and a too little fun. Gustin can sing but the last number was too obviously pre-recorded and synched (I mean, all the numbers were, but that one seemed a bit off in the presentation. The "Super Friends" number certainly had Rachel Bloom's ("Crazy Ex-Girlfriend") fingerprints all over it. "Put A Little love In Your Heart" seemed like a poor choice for the show.

Basically a Holodeck episode. The superfriends song finally matched Legends for wackiness this season. Nothing else really stood out for me.

I've seen a lot of fan speculation that his character was originally supposed to be Mister Mxyzptlk in the role and then the showrunners realized as a Superman character he should first appear on Supergirl. The Music Meister came across as a Mister Mxyzptlk-like character.

The one highlight of this episode for me was Supergirl singing Moon River. I've always liked the song and Melissa looked great dressed up in the 40's garb.

I did not like much of what happened afterwards except the Superfriends number with Barry and Kara together. It was a sloppy episode with odd story beats, even for a musical.

This was not in the same league as Buffy's musical episode.

Re: The Flash (S3E17) -- "Duet" -- Supergirl crossover -- 3/21/17

It is what it is. It was light and fun, but didn't do anything to extend the plot.

So now we have no choice but to watch all the CW to follow what's going on in every show. I was thinking of dropping Supergirl because of its blatant allegorical elements, but I guess that's not going to happen now...
