It must be really tough to be an SNL writer these days. They have the whole show written, then the day it is to air, the PTOS tweets something so spectacularly ridiculous that they can't not address it. On the flip side though, the comedy does write itself.

Reading Norm McDonald's book 'based on a true story'. Pretty, pretty good. Challenging my beliefs in truth...

Is there an Alec Baldwin appearance as Trump? Or Melissa McCarthy as Sean Spicer? Or Kate McKinnon as KellyAnne Conway, Hillary Clinton or some political figure? Otherwise, I'll just go to bed early.

Holy shit - haven't seen a single skit that was even remotely funny.

Weekend Update was good but the rest was mediocre.

Kate McKinnon appeared only in the opening sketch and as Conway tweeting in between commercials. Alex Moffat was in several sketches and maybe he is getting pushed by Lorne.

Octavia is not a comedian so that did not help. Maybe Scar Jo next week will be better since she is one of the more underrated hosts.

This was a big problem I had with this episode. I feel like she wasn't really putting any oomph any of her characters. I think a host giving their all can sometimes salvage subpar writing, but it felt like she was underplaying most of her roles here.

A key example is the 'bring a friend to dinner' sketch. She's supposed to be this kooky weirdo that Cecily thrusts upon her friends, but the character just felt more sad than funny. They had to sell her oddness in dialogue but it just didn't work.

I was watching today and realized I could not for the life of me explain why. The recurring cast and writing are pathetic on the whole and it really has come down to the guest host. When Hanks or Baldwin or Timberlake are on I'll come back. But barring that the show has really become a colossal waste of DVR space.

Weak episode overall. McKinney as Sessions in the cold opening was good, as was the TBD Republican hero movie trailer. Weekend update was good as well. Otherwise it was blech.

Weakest male cast in a long time, especially since Lorne has no idea how to use Davidson.

EDIT: Ok, looks Davidson just kicked a drug habit. Even so, Beck Bennett is a weak lead.

Hopefully Kate was being saved for next week, where she can eyebang Scarlett like she did Margot Robbie. Villaseñor imitating Kate as an A-lister seems like the beginning of a sendoff.

Lorne should have never let Taron Killam and Jay Pharoah go.

I see that Baldwin is going to be retiring his SNL Trump appearances. Good riddance. Baldwin is immensely talented but his Trump was just not very good. I can only guess that his goal was to play Trump as a snarling retard. Well OK job done I guess. Congratulations. But it took no talent and demonstrated no creativity. SNL needs to begin negotiations with Anthony Atamanuik pronto. His Trump makes Baldwin's look like it came from a crappy high school talent show performance.

Just watched a video of Anthony A on youtube as Trump debating Bernie

He was just doing a vocal impression of Trump, not a performance at all, and the impression was not very good.

BTW, if you thought that Baldwin's Trump came across as a snarling retard, then his impression was 100% spot on.

I don't get the praise for Anthony Atamanuik at all. If it weren't for the bad wig, I don't think I would guess he's doing Trump.

I have been saying for years that I think the problem with SNL and their Political Sketches is the writing more then the cast. The peak of the show is when they had writers like Al Franken, Robert Smigel, Conan O'Brien, Jim Downey, etc. I remember John Lovitz did an OK Michael Dukakis, but it was the writing that made those sketches so damn funny, "I can't believe I'm losing to this guy!"

I think once Tina Fey took over in the early 00's as the head writer is when the show really dropped in quality. The political sketches today are just a mimic of what is happening sometimes word for word. The old political sketches were funny because they created something out of nothing. I remember during the 1992 primaries they had all of the Democrat Candidates goto a Star Trek Convention, and it was hilariously watching Phil Hartman play Candidate Bill Clinton and Dana Carvey play Jerry Brown talking to a bunch of Trekkies and sell them on their policies.

That sums up my opinion of Octavia Spencer. She became the "obligatory black woman in any movie" for so long she is now getting better roles by default. I have never found her performances to be any different than what she did tonight. I have not seen Hidden Figures, but I don't expect anything more out of her there despite the award nominations/wins (did she win? I don't know). Even her monologue seemed fake and forced.

McKinnon's KellyAnne tweeting all over the place was the best part of the show this week. The subtlety was fantastic.

I hadn't watched the show in over 20 years, but the political stuff has brought me back in recent weeks. I think the other skits have proven what many have said: the political stuff writes itself.

I just watched it on DVR last night and found this is the way to do it so you can fast forward through the junk (which was a good chunk of the show).

I've never heard of the musical guest, Preacher Pornstache. WTF was that? I honestly thought he was skit, not the musical guest.

Can't tell if serious or not ... If that is the guy who did the Trump/Sanders debate, he was much more cartoonish. He seems to be more of lampoon of a lampoon than an actual effort to portray the person.

Hell, Baldwin fooled the foreign press.

Wasnt it rumored that the reason Taran and Jay were fired is they were caught using drugs at a party in front of Lorne? Kinda interesting with the Pete Davidson news.

Nope. Octavia was SUPPOSED to be sad and not funny.

You completely missed the focus of that bit. It was all about the White girl trying to be all "Look at my cool new crazy party Black Diva Girlfriend ya'll!!". She was turning a pretty average Black woman into some "Baddass Ghetto Diva Bitch". Everything Octavia's character did, kinda normal things, the white girl turned in to some "Turnt up" and "lit" type pop-ghetto culture thing. It was hit on how Black people are often turned into some kind of circus attraction to show off by some whites.

Another great bit was the girl at the bar who kept getting hit on. Literally just last week on FB, I had seen women complaining about Men who pretend to be all Pro-Woman and at Women marches just to get pussy. And here is SNL putting it into a bit. It was pretty funny and pretty accurate.

..Geez, I hope SNL doesn't keep doing all this political shit... /sarcasm
