HOLMES: You know, I’ve spent a lot of time wondering about Pete and Ali, and if they would be romantic, or if they would be friends. That’s one of the things that I don’t even think, at this point, I’m the authority on that. Because this is where the show is wrapping up. It ends in that active way where now, it’s up to you to sort of imagine what might happen. I know that they’re sort of connected, that they have a deep heart connection, that they’re in it together, that they represent something that the other person might lack. Like, Ali has a lot more integrity. She has a lot more artistic feel about standup. Pete has what Pete has, I don’t know what you call it, a Golden Retriever-like enthusiasm for doing whatever? (laughs)

HOLMES: I think they sort of need each other, and all I can say is in my imagination, they’re going to be in each other’s lives no matter what. If it’s romantically or professionally or as friends, you don’t throw something like that away, but it seems to me more fun to be like, “Let’s leave it ambiguous, and let the people sort of imagine how they would like it to end.” Because, frankly, that is how it ends. How it ends in your imagination is how it ends. That’s kind of a fun way to empower the viewer, and be like, “You have it now. We had it for this, and now it’s yours.”
