The Walking Dead (S7E09) -- Midseason Premiere -- "Rock in the Road" -- 2/12/17

The highly anticipated mid-season seven premiere of the #1 show in all of television among adults 18-49, AMC's "The Walking Dead," launches Sunday, February 12th at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. On the debut episode, "Rock in the Road," Rick and the group are led to a new community where they are introduced to its inhabitants and ruler. A familiar face resurfaces.

The first half of Season 7 saw Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the group broken by Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), forced to fall under his will and brutally convinced to live under his rules. The second half of the season will focus on preparing for war and gathering the supplies and numbers to take Negan down once and for all.

Rick's group will find out yet again that the world isn't what they thought it was. It's much bigger than anything they've seen so far. While they have a singular purpose - to defeat Negan - it won't come easy. More importantly, victory will require more than Alexandria. They need the numbers of the Kingdom and the Hilltop, but, similar to how Rick felt, Ezekiel (Khary Payton) and Gregory (Xander Berkeley) do not want bloodshed. To convince them otherwise will take more than speeches. The lengths Rick and the group will have to go to in order to find weapons, food and new fighters is nothing short of remarkable.

We'll meet new survivors in incredible places. We'll see Rick and the group tested in ways we've never seen before. We'll see treachery from people we trust. Rick is confident as he will see his group and many others band together with the common goal of taking down Negan. But no amount of planning will prepare the group for all-out war with Negan and his army.

Episode 9 of 16

That hiatus went by fast.

 They're trying too hard.

Hopefully they can course correct and fix the shitshow that was the first half of S7.

That's from the AMC press release. You knew they were going to oversell it.

I recall reading there will be more "super-sized" episodes for the 2nd half of the season.

That is what I thought of the whole write-up. Written like it came from a 6th grader giving a book report. Or the TWD staff writers' room.

Sorry. Starting already.

I was very down on the 1st half of Season 7, but that was a pretty good episode last. I still think this will be the lowest rated midseason opener in a few years as I was suprised at how many people I work with who are big fans didn't know the show was coming back Feb 12th. There was just no buzz for the first time since it became a hit among my friends/co-workers.

And Rosita must have been on her period in last nights episode......

So the King is responsible for all the animal legs getting broken, or the horses deaths? And for destroying the livelihood of many families?

I also thought that was a pretty good return. A lot of tension and suspense without the grotesque violence that some people hated in the first half. The scene with the group gathering the explosives before the armada of walkers came in was pretty well executed.

Although i think it was pretty obvious that Rick and Michonne's cars with the barbed wire taking out the walkers was all done in post with computers.

I kind of  at how really over the top Ezekiel was in that scene meeting Rick and his group.

So it looks like we have yet another new group in the picture. Weird that they ended with a smirk on Rick's face. But I guess he thinks this is more bodies he can use to fight the Saviors.

My guess is that the smirk is because Gabriel is with the group, so he knows they are actually "friendly" and ready to help fight.

Winner winner chicken dinner. Could not have been more obvious.

New group? That wasn't the camp that Tara found?

The summary on this episode on my Comcast TV Guide said 'A familiar face will return....'

Did I miss something last night, or was that the reveal at the end?

I wasn't sure as I didn't pause to verify, but I thought it was the group of females Tara and Heath previously encountered. As Rick attempted to build his army, I was surprised Tara never mentioned them. Not only does that group have some people, but they have weapons and ammunition.

I thought it was the women's group at first, but noticed there were some men amongst them.

I thought the car/wire scene was ridiculous, but this is the WD universe where physics allows whatever is convenient. Interesting effect, anyway.

One thing that didn't make sense, however... Either they drove past, and somehow didn't notice the walker horde on the way to the car blockade, or they went in the opposite direction when they left.

Don't think so. If it's someone we've seen, it's probably related to "boots" from the boat.

Didn't they move the cars so they could get on the highway?

What I missed the first time watching.

Spoiler:

Gabriel leaves in the beginning with the food and tools etc.The subs point out someone is saying
Gabriel twice. And the hooded person sit up in the back seat of the car as Gabriel is driving off.
Does Gab know this person?

I'm guessing this woman is the leader of the new group that is revealed at the end.
She is friendly and the person who seen Rick and Aarron get the guns from the boat in A earlier episode.
And she is not alone.:)

AS Gabriel writes "Boat" on one page in the bible or ledger book he left on the floor at Alexandria.

So Gabriel and the new group want Rick to find Gabriel in case the saviors are watching Alexandria.
