I've watched about 4 or 5 episodes now.
Some of it isn't bad... but most of it is pretty poorly executed. It's preaching to the choir type of stuff without giving more specific detail on points that matter (ie: GMOs. I'm on board with the good of GMOs, but the episode was a mess). I was expecting something a bit... deeper. So maybe that's my fault. The debate segments are pretty pointless, and the song & dance stuff is pure garbage.
I'll keep watching to the end, as there's a few more I'm interested in, but yeah... it's not quite what I was expecting.
Alas, a revival of Beakman's World might have been more appropriate.

I watched part of the first episode and found it incredibly boring.

The floating levy project in Venice was cool and not something I was familiar with.

Not sure I'll watch any more. As you said, good idea, poor execution.

Technically, neither are "scientists," but engineers.

However, Dolph Lundgren never worked as an engineer; he went into acting instead of going to MIT on the Fulbright Scholarship. Also, while Dolph studied chemical engineering for a year at Washington State University, he didn't earn a BS there. Instead, he finished his BS at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.

Meanwhile, Bill Nye actually worked as an engineer at Boeing and worked on the 747. He was also a volunteer "science explainer" at a local museum

Also, the focus on degrees ignores all the work both have done in the decades since. Dolph has focused on acting. Bill Nye has focused on promoting science and science education. He's the CEO of The Planetary Society. We was a professor at Cornell University. He holds several US patents. He clearly is way more into science, and has done more for science, than Dolph Lundgren has.


In some ways, it's like criticizing the Mythbusters as not being "scientists." That doesn't mean what they do doesn't promote science and the scientific method.




All that said, I do find the new show entertaining, but a bit "light." It may have been better as an hour long show, as the show seems to barrel through its segments, especially the panel, to get to everything, instead of taking time to go more in depth. But maybe it's for a more casual viewer.

Definitely needs to be an hour long. Everything feels too rushed or shallow.

It’s strange to me that his schtick, which was perfectly pitched for an audience of 11 year olds, can now be presented to adults with very little alteration, and adults will accept it as an interesting source of science news.

I’ll keep watching Nova.
