Meh, mediocre episode. Not much action, which is the heart and soul of the show.
I'll admit, it's hard to watch this show without any familiar 24 characters (even though we all know who's coming back later). Who can we trust out of all these new characters?
For other spinoffs, especially with sitcoms, the viewer doesn't need to worry about trusting the new characters. It's just another show.
I'm sure it will get better since this is all setup. Just have to get use to new faces.
I still think my 24 time travel idea would make for a better season. Eric Carter could have been David Palmer's great-great grandson. "24 hours" of time traveling and action to save Palmer, while bringing back all the old characters.

It was entertaining, but a lot of typical ridiculous 24 plot devices. This was the 1st episode directed by Jon Cassar. Surprised that they gave him a more crazy soapy plot than action-driven.
at Carter's ridiculous plan to get the $2M. That is a crazy enough plan that Jack Bauer would do it too. And
that he just happened to attract the attention of a white racial-profiling cop when talking to Rebecca about the plan.
And go figure they find out the "traitor" by searching through the CTU "subnets"
At least they're getting the 24 lingo down.
The subplots were hilarious too with the tattle tale student getting murdered by the teacher and then Isaac's girlfriend backstabbing him after hearing that he was going to dump her.

and
at Gerald McRaney playing Jimmy Smits Dad. He's only like 8 years older than him.

The subplots are terrible.
That chick from Skins lost a lot of weight. Almost didn't recognize her.

The $2 million raid was ridiculous. Why not just tell his buddy he has the money and when they meet just drop him right there?

I'm done with this one. It does feel like more 24. But I think I was completely forgiving on the narrative devices they used in the past because I was such a big fan of Jack Bauer. I don't think I can let them slide with this new guy.

yeah, light on action, but still heavy on 24 absurdity.

I was thinking about this mediocre episode this morning...
What if the terrorist son isn't really a terrorist, but working for MI-6? He doesn't want the flash drive back to activate the sleeper cells, but to stop all of them.
Sure, he didn't mind killing the other four soldiers since they killed his father. And he doesn't care about collateral damage (killing the soldiers' families), since shutting down the sleeper cells is more of a priority.
Maybe not working directly for MI-6, but being forced to for whatever reason. And that's why he doesn't care about collateral damage.

I actually caught up on Live Another Day last month in anticipation of this (yes, am playing some severe catch-up).
Thought the pilot was pretty bad. I don't know if it's the lack of Kiefer or that the plot devices are just so hokey (probably both). Haven't watched the 2nd episode yet, but my hopes have been diminished.

Hawkins does have a baby face, but he's not a bad actor. He was really good on Straight Outta Compton and had a small part on The Walking Dead. He's an up and coming actor. I read he got this part without even auditioning. The casting director saw him on Straight Outta Compton and immediately thought he was the right guy for this.
I get you are probably one of those fans who only associate 24 with Kiefer so it's next to impossible for you to accept a spinoff of it/change with new actors.

Man I'm just not feeling this at all. None of the new faces in CTU are doing anything for me at all(though Miranda Otto is aging quite well) and it's just not pulling me in. Hawkins makes for a terrible lead also. He has no real charisma, you don't feel like he's a badass and his baby face makes him look like he's 18. Considering who shows up later in the season I kind of feel that maybe they weren't impressed with him but already had so much footage they had to stick with him. I wish they hard switched him with Professor Zoom from the Flash and made Hawkins head of CTU and Zoom out in the field.

But then again, that would be a short two episode season of 24

I was wondering the same thing. I'm sorry, but if comes down to killing someone that is willing to sell something to a terrorist organization that will jeopardize millions of people, that would seem like an easy decision for someone with a military background.
But then again, that would be a short two episode season of 24

I'm guessing that Carter has some loyalty to his fellow Ranger even though he's lost it.

What is it with you and these kind of posts? I know exactly where he is coming from. I watched every episode of 24 and I too thought this episode was one of its worst. More than enough reason to bail given there are far better options out there these days, including re-watching the better 24 seasons if you own them.

Meh.
The thing that bugs me and many others usually with 24 is the mole aspect. I understand that moles are often needed to run an evil plan, at least don't put the frikkin mole in CTU. But to have the mole as a presidential candidate's right hand person is just stupid. Make it some lad who answers phones or something, not the frillin top aid.
As for the 2M raid, everything has been said. Just useless. Tell the guy you have the money and give him fakes.

The first episode worked because it set up tension and you had not seen how ridiculous some of the story lines were going to get. Then right off the bat you get the implausible CTU activity, the cliche gang background, the PSTD/paranoid solider, horribly acted school terror plot and the way over the top police lockup plan.
24 was at it's best when things were only a little cliche and over the top. This appears to be lumping the greatest misses all in one collection. People rightfully pull out the cougar stuff because otherwise the series was working at that point. E2 was all cougar, all the time.
Hoping it gets better over the next couple episodes because they've got me until plot development that they announced a few months back. If that doesn't improve things I too am out.

I'm liking this show a bit more than many to this point are
probably a case of Bauer less water down second rate cast 24 is still better than a lot of shows out there

IF you compare it against the other pure action shows (not superhero or sci fi action shows) like Lethal Weapon and Training day, it stacks up very well
Put it this way, i have been looking forward to watching the next episode so far

I was very vocal about being against the Lethal Weapon show at first. I would not hesitate to say that LW is better than 24: Legacy.
