Sad to hear. I forget how good looking she was in her younger years.

Which made me think of Valerie Harper ...she's still alive three years (I think) after being diagnosed as terminal.

Sad. She was more my parents' generation than mine, but it wasn't unusual to catch a re-run of her show or the Dick Van Dyke show growing up. She was a real trailblazer and a very good actress, especially at comedy.

You know what's amazing -- out of the main cast of the Dick Van Dyke show (her, Dick, Maury Amsterdam, Rose Marie, Larry Mathews, Carl Reiner), she's only the second one to die. There are shows that started twenty years later that have higher mortality rates.

This led me to the IMDB. I didn't realize, -or at least remember, -that there was a "Dick Van Dyke Show Revisited" special back in 2004 that picks up the characters 30 years later.

Yes, that is surprising. I would add, though, that I'd consider Richard Deacon part of the main cast, too. I think he was the first to go.

Carl and DVD both seem in good health. I've purchased signed books from both of them in the past couple of years, which was a huge thrill.

This seems like a good time to get back to watching the rest of my Dick Van Dyke Show Blu-ray set. I took a break after burning through the first two seasons. Amazing that the first season had 30 episodes, and seasons 2-5 each have 32.

Re: RIP Mary Tyler Moore - Dead at 80

The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Dick Van Dyke Show are unapproachable in terms of beginning to end overall quality among sitcoms. As great as the rest of the casts were, I'm sure her natural charm, beauty, and comedy were the key to both shows success. She was my first crush, inspirational in her post-stardom life thru interviews and books, and my heart is saddened today.

Re: RIP Mary Tyler Moore - Dead at 80

I wonder if she makes it onto the Oscars "In Memorium" segment or is she considered primarily a TV icon like Farrah and Vigoda? She did get an Oscar nomination though.

Re: RIP Mary Tyler Moore - Dead at 80

Grant Tinker, Moore's ex-husband (married 1962-81) died at 90 in November of last year. The two of them created MTM Enterprises. He's seen in some opening sequences of Mary's show eating with her at a Minneapolis restaurant, as the camera zooms out, and in the closing credits, as the two walk away from the camera, hand in hand.
