Re: Your Official Top 10 of 2016

1. OJ: Made in America
2. The People Vs OJ Simpson
3. Westworld
4. Game of Thrones
5. Veep
6. Stranger Things
7. Halt and Catch Fire
8. Galavant
9. The Americans
10. Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency

Honorable Mention
Search Party, Better Call Saul, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Mr. Robot

Had virtually zero interest in either OJ project prior to their airings, but quality is quality, and they were both excellent. Still sad that Galavant had to go away.

I forgot iZombie, but it probably would only have been an honorable mention.

Noticed some key omissions after scanning through the results thus far -- shows that either made prior Top 10 lists or notable new shows. I'm sure there are others I overlooked that are worth mentioning.

Archer
Shameless
Masters of Sex
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
Power
Documentary Now!
Hap and Leonard
The X-Files
Bloodline
Vikings
Horace and Pete

Only show I would add that no one has mentioned is Black-ish.

Most of those sans had very polarizing seasons so their lack of inclusion doesn't surprise me.

I'd like to include Salem's Season Three and Penny Dreadful's Season Three, but I haven't made my way through them.

Re: Your Official Top 10 of 2016

In no particular order, the shows that made Sunday a special night for me:

Game of Thrones - Maybe not their best season but, some of the best episodes they've ever done.

Westworld - You can tell halfway through that they retooled the show but, it never stopped being compelling television.

Penny Dreadful - Such an underrated show that never got the audience it deserved. It will be missed.

Other shows that I made sure to keep up with throughout the year:

Person of Interest - Surprised as hell this show was on CBS and somehow lasted 5 years. It was great throughout its entire run and ended perfectly.

The People vs. O.J. Simpson - I was too young when the O.J. trial happened to remember any of it. This show was so well done and cements it as the trial of the century.

Supernatural - I've been watching this show for years and somehow they managed to make one on best seasons with season 11. I hoping they get to 300 episodes.

Lucifer - I can't that the first season was that particular good but, for whatever reason I still really enjoyed watching it. The second season has been a big improvement and its a show I look forward to watching on Mondays.

Shows I watched after their seasons had ended:

Dark Matter - I watched both seasons of this show in 2016. I admit I wasn't expecting much from this show in the beginning even though it was creating by producers from the Stargate franchise. However, it's a cool space like another Syfy production (The Expanse) which just missed my Top 10.

The Magicians - I just watched this show in the last week. I had heard on this very board how good this show was and pleasantly surprised the all the praise was warranted.

Wentworth - I sort of wanted to put Orange is the New Black on this list but, Wentworth is just the better show. I didn't expect them to end the season the way they did, and it could possibly ruin the show. However, I have faith the writers can figure out a way to make it all worth it.

Honorable Mentions:

O.J. Made in America - Even though this was shown in 5 parts I still look at this as a film albeit a long film.

Highly Questionable - I watch this show everyday when I get home. I love those guys.

Still putting my list together, but reading everyone else's top ten's, all I can say is I guess no one is watching Rectify- I don't think there has been a single mention.

Hands down #1 for me.....

Yes, and am embarrassed to say I still have it sitting on my DVR. (BTW, The Missing was technically a 2015 show (it made my top 10 last year))

Dang, I overlooked that on your list. Sorry about that.

Yup, there was only 1 mention of it in this thread from what I saw. I'm 2 seasons behind so am still playing catch up, but heard great things about the final episodes.

The Missing's second season hasn't aired in the United States yet on Starz. That's why he probably didn't count it.

Geofferson 01-03-17 09:55 AM

Re: Your Official Top 10 of 2016

^ Yes, correct. That's a fair point for content airing via non-US media. Another example could be The Young Pope. Aired on the Sky network in Italy in 2016, but won't premiere for US audiences until HBO airs it in 2017. Heard great things about it so it's high on my list of anticipated shows for 2017.

Same goes for The Missing S2 - which Starz plans to air in Feb.

Same with me. Season 2 depressed me so I haven't been motivated to start watching season 3 yet. It's on the short list to watch in the beginning of this year. Then season four would follow at some point.

It's hard to narrow it down to 10, but I'll try. There was a lot of great television last year.

In no particular order...

Gomorrah
11.22.63
Rectify
Search Party
The OA
Game of Thrones
The Last Man on Earth
Atlanta
Quarry
Westworld

And if I could make it a top 20, I'd add...

The Night Of
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
Stranger Things
Vice Principals
The Walking Dead
The Americans
Better Call Saul
Mr. Robot
Broad City
Love

I'm a season behind on Rectify, though it likely would have made my top five if I was caught up. Like The Americans, it operates on a different wavelength than most television.

Noticeably missing from most lists is The Walking Dead. For the #1 show on cable, few people must think it's great television. I certainly don't think it's good television, much less great tv.

#4 for me. Rates so high because it's familiar Sunday night "comfort food" and can always count on it to illicit some fun discussion (even if the discussion is about how bad an episode is).
